Florida is a test-case for what defunding public education does to a community: 1. SAT scores have fallen consistently every year (dropping 18 points from 2023-2024 alone). 2. Half the students cannot read at grade level by the end of the year, and only 33% by the beginning. 3. Highly qualified teachers are leaving the classroom in record droves, and substitutes, where only a GED is required, teach full-time in schools. 4. Disabled students lose Title 1 supports. 5. Teachers lose the protection of unions, which, as education becomes politicized, means losing legal defense, retirement, and so much more. And this is not counting losing the vital support of public schools for whole communities during and following natural disasters, losing free or reduced price lunches, losing representation and rights for gay and nonbinary students, and so much more.
