I’m dropping out of school to pursue a career in modeling A few months ago, I did a shoot with one of my friends, and during the shoot, all I could think about was, “I’m really good at this!” I think at a point in every person's life, they discover that they’re good at something. It could be something random and unexpected. But does that mean just because you’re good at something, it becomes your passion? Would I really drop out of school to become a model just because I think I’m good at it? It’s important to differentiate a passion from a hobby so we don’t make decisions we regret. Here are a few tips to help: ✅Level of Commitment: A passion often requires a higher level of commitment and dedication than a hobby. It's something you're deeply invested in and willing to prioritize in your life. ✅Intrinsic Motivation: Passion comes from within and fuels your enthusiasm and energy. On the other hand, hobbies can be more about relaxation and enjoyment without a strong inner drive. ✅Impact on Goals: Your passion usually aligns with your long-term goals and aspirations. It contributes to your sense of purpose and fulfillment. Hobbies, while enjoyable, may not have the same impact on your overall life direction. ✅Time and Effort: You're likely to invest significant time and effort into pursuing your passion, often going above and beyond what is required. Hobbies, while enjoyable, may not demand the same level of dedication. ✅Monetary Considerations: While both passions and hobbies can be monetized, passions are often pursued for reasons beyond financial gain. They are driven by a deep love and interest in the subject matter. Understanding the distinction between passion and hobby can help you prioritize your time and energy. As the year comes to a close, I can't help but reflect on the goals I set for 2024 and how fulfilling it feels to tick them off my list! At the start of the year, I gave myself three main goals: - Level up my skills as a photographer – This was a big one, and I’m proud of how much I’ve grown creatively and technically. - Learn new skills like graphic design and video editing – Diving into these areas has been challenging at times but so rewarding. - Travel – This was my favorite goal, and the experiences I’ve had exploring new places have inspired me both creatively and personally. Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were ups and downs—moments of doubt, challenges I hadn’t anticipated, and days where motivation felt hard to come by. But those moments made the wins even sweeter. They reminded me that growth doesn’t happen in a straight line, and that’s okay. Looking back, setting these goals and prioritizing them helped me stay focused and motivated, even when things got tough. It’s proof that when we’re intentional about what we want to achieve, we can push through obstacles and come out stronger on the other side. As we step into 2025, I’m excited to set new goals and take on new challenges. I have heard that sharing a personal anecdote can be a powerful tool for learning and growth. Allow me to share a glimpse of my journey of proposing to the one loved, which involved a touch of #creativity and a whole lot of #perseverance. For those who know me, fully know my passion for movies. It's a world where stories come alive, emotions are felt, and memories are made plus my way to clear my mind from the troubles of the day. So, when it came time to propose, I knew I wanted to do something that could incorporate this #passion into the momentous occasion. I began my mission to create a proposal that could only have come from me. I meticulously selected DVDs to get clips from my favourite RomCom movies, each one holding a special place in my heart. But here's where the #learning began: the #process wasn't easy. It involved hours of searching, ripping, editing, and refining to capture the essence of my message on how I felt in just a few precious moments. Initially, I envisioned using clips from a multitude of movies, but the reality of the challenge soon became apparent. Getting those clips was going to be no walk in the park—it required #determination and perseverance. However, in the end determination and perseverance lost out to time. I had to craft a video proposal comprised of clips from only four movies. Each clip still had to be carefully chosen to reflect my message of what she meant to me and the journey we had shared together so far. And the result? Well, she did say YES. But beyond the joyous outcome lies a valuable #lesson as well: creativity coupled with perseverance can transform even the most daunting tasks into moments of #triumph but you also need to know when and how to #pivot your plans while still being able to achieve your final goal. I often get asked why I share work in progress pictures on my social media instead of just showcasing the finished product. And the answer is simple - to highlight the value of the journey, not just the destination. In today's society, we are constantly bombarded with picture-perfect images on social media, giving the illusion that success and perfection can be achieved effortlessly. However, the reality is far from it. Behind every finished piece, there is a process of trial and error, experimentation, and continuous improvement. By sharing work in progress pictures, I want to break this misconception and show the importance of the journey. It's not about achieving perfection in one go, but rather the continuous effort and growth that leads to the final product. Moreover, I believe that sharing my journey can inspire others to embrace their own imperfections and embrace the learning process. It's about celebrating the small victories, learning from mistakes, and enjoying the creative process. So the next time you see a work in progress picture on my feed, remember that it's not just about the end result, but also the journey that got me there. Drawing will make your life better and your brain happier. Robb Gilbear asked a group of us, "It's two years from now and you're giving a TEDx talk - what is yours about?" My mind went directly to drawing. My imaginary future talk would share about how drawing has, without exaggeration, changed my life. ✍ ✨ Learning to draw has deepened my attention span, amid the endless torrent of digital distractions. ✍ ✨ Learning to draw has helped me connect with the world around me and attend to what is actually *there* rather than what I think might be there. ✍ ✨ Learning to draw has humbled me and reintroduced me to the incredible magic of learning anew, which has been a balm to a brain that has doggedly pursued excellence in a very narrow form of expertise (hello academic ladder 👋) ✍ ✨ Learning to draw has helped me connect with process and disconnect from outcomes, to experiment openly and without expectation, and to discover the joy of engaging in all of this messiness in community with others. This may not be a surprise, given how often I post about drawing. But even a year ago, this isn't what would have come to mind. It absolutely knocks me over when I reflect on how much more joyful, colourful, and expansive my life has become in just a few years of learning. ....Of course the subtext of this imaginary TEDx talk would be about the value of hobbies, of taking one's pleasure seriously, and of cultivating spaces of escape from capitalism. Drawing may not solve all of your problems. If you pick up a pencil and doodle for a few minutes, you may be in the exact same spot. But at least you'll have a little doodle.
