As 2024 comes to a close, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the journey my assistance dog, Ocho, and I have undertaken. This year has been a testament to resilience, teamwork, and the power of advocacy.
🏆 Achievements in 2024:
- Professional Milestones: This year, I was honored to be recognised as the Outstanding Female Disability Champion at The Women's Awards and was in the top 100 for the second year in a row at the Shaw Trust #disabilitypower100 party. These accolade is not just a personal achievement but a victory for all disabled professionals striving for recognition and equality.
- Advocacy and Awareness: Ocho and I have continued to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes. By demonstrating Ocho’s vital role in my daily life and work as a Dog A.I.D. (Assistance In Disability) companion we have shown that assistance dogs are indispensable medical aids, not mere pets.
- Community Engagement: I have had the privilege of speaking at various events, including a Radis Community Care wellbeing fayre and at the Animal Star Awards, sharing our story, and inspiring others to pursue their dreams despite the challenges they may face. Our mission has always been to empower and educate, and this year, we reached more people than ever before.
🧐 Looking Ahead to 2025 and Beyond:
- Inclusive Work Environments: I envision a future where workplaces are fully inclusive, providing necessary accommodations for all employees. This includes better accessibility, flexible working conditions, and a deeper understanding of the unique contributions that disabled professionals bring to the table.
- Enhanced Support Systems: It is crucial to improve support systems within health and social care. This means more funding for assistance programs, better training for healthcare providers on disability issues, and policies that prioritise the well-being and independence of disabled individuals.
- Recognition and Representation: We need to see more disabled professionals, in leadership roles, in TV shows, everywhere. Representation matters, and it’s time for our voices to be heard at all levels of decision-making in health and social care.
Together, Ocho and I will continue to advocate for these changes, striving to create a more inclusive and equitable world for everyone. Here’s to a transformative 2025! 🦮👨🏼🦼
