What if I told you it's more important to understand what someone is good at than it is to identify/measure all of their skills? Identifying expertise helps you solve for business problems like project/team assignments, coaching/mentoring matching, knowledge management/sharing, performance benchmarking, succession planning, and more. At #DevLearn I presented a session on how to identify expertise in an organization, and I LOVED the conversation - it was the first time I've presented that the audience had such great questions after the presentation that the next presenter (Sorry Jennifer Solberg!) had to cut us off :) If you are creating a top-down skills strategy, it can be tempting to try to identify ALL THE SKILLS.
