Prime Minister Keir Starmer has promised to boost the proportion of children starting school “ready to learn” as part of the government’s reboot of its targets for this parliament. 🚸 Speaking at an event in Buckinghamshire this morning, Starmer said that by 2028, three-quarters of five-year-olds will be school ready. “One in three children not ready for school at the age of five…kids in reception, who aren’t starting to read…they’re struggling to speak. It is a scandal…an affront to the British value of equal respect…if we do not give every child, whatever their background…a fair chance to succeed.” Children & Young People Now 👉 https://bit.ly/4f5Z3j4

[Joint media statement ] 📄 Equal Education and the Equal Education Law Centre strongly oppose the Western Cape Education Department’s decision to cut over 2000 teaching posts: https://lnkd.in/gnKx6stP Fiscal austerity continues to deprive learners of the full realisation of their constitutional right to basic education. Severely overcrowded classes, with 50 to 60 learners in a lesson, are still prevalent in many poorly-resourced schools across the country. Years of relentless austerity have worsened this situation. We call on the public to defend the right to education by participating in a community-led picket at the WCED offices on Friday 13 September at 7:30 am. We further call on the national government and provincial authorities to rethink their budget priorities, invest in our future, protect teachers’ livelihoods, and protect the rights of learners.

The Education sector needs to start prioritizing learning from a psycho-social lens. They need to understand the implications that contextual and structural issues such overcrowding, lack of access to resources etc. affect learning and the mental health of learners. Teachers also end up under-performing because of unconducive working environments. Psycho-social support and inclusive learning also means having enough teachers for our learners and healthy environments
