Something to rock your world before the weekend! The default paste option in Microsoft Word is now to merge the formatting, rather than having to select it as a paste option. Game changer! Have you noticed this change? How does it impact you? Comment below.
In another Microsoft Word update, the default paste option will be to merge the formatting, rather than having to select it as a paste option. This is a game-changer. According to The Verge article, " Unlike the previous 'keep source formatting' default, the 'merge formatting' option preserves the original bold and underlined text, along with list and table structure." 💡 How to get more from Microsoft Word – Adding page breaks and keeping text together 💡 This is tip #3 in my series of 10 tips for getting more out of Microsoft Word. What usually happens when you want to keep chunks of your text together and not split it across two pages in Word? Do you end up pressing return over and over until it jumps onto the next page, only to find when you edit something further up you have to go back and change it? That’s where my next tip (or tips) may come in useful. 📃 Page breaks: Next time you want a section of text to start on a new page, place your cursor at the start of the section, hold down Ctrl and press Return. This creates a page break (which will be visible when you switch on the formatting marks). ➡ Keep with next: If you want to keep multiple paragraphs together on the same page, try ticking ‘keep with next’ in the paragraph settings. This means that the paragraph will stay on the same page as the next paragraph after it. We have this one set up on all our internal templates and in the style settings for our clients’ documents. It makes our work look so much cleaner. For me it’s also a must when setting up heading styles as it avoids a heading sitting at the bottom of a page while its related text jumps over onto the next page. To use this feature, just right-click a paragraph in your document, choose Paragraph > Line and Page Breaks, check the ‘Keep with next’ option and then hit OK. 🔗 Non-breaking spaces: A non-breaking space prevents an unwanted automatic line break between words or characters that you want to keep together. For example, dates or numbered items: 14th August and not 14th August Table 2 and not Table 2 To create a non-breaking space press Ctrl + Shift + space bar. 🔗 And non-breaking hyphens: Like non-breaking spaces, non-breaking hyphens prevent Word adding a line break where you don’t want it – such as in the middle of a negative number: -16 and not - 16 To create a non-breaking hyphen press Ctrl + shift + -. I hope that all makes sense. If you have any questions, post them below. I’d love to know how you get on.
