Here's what we've observed: Key Findings: - Tech still leads: BE/BTech and MTech graduates continue to dominate, comprising over 50% of student founders. This aligns with the tech-centric nature of many startups. - MBA on the rise: MBA founders increased from 11.78% last year to 13.11% this year – a significant jump! The MBA Shift: Traditionally seen as a fast track to corporate success, we're witnessing a paradigm shift. Starting a startup in college can be both rewarding and challenging. Drawing from my experience with Manch Of You and DigiHeights-X , there are several pros and cons to consider. On the positive side, college students have access to valuable resources such as mentorship, funding, and networking opportunities through their institutions, along with incubators and accelerators designed to support student entrepreneurs. With fewer financial responsibilities, the risk of starting a business is lower, and the learning experience gained from hands-on business management and leadership is invaluable, even if the startup doesn't succeed. Additionally, the college environment provides unique networking opportunities with peers, professors, and industry professionals, and young entrepreneurs often bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions to the table. However, there are significant challenges as well. Balancing academic responsibilities with the demands of running a startup can lead to burnout and affect academic performance. Inexperience can result in avoidable mistakes, and limited financial resources make securing funding difficult. Running a startup can also consume personal and social time, and some may view college-founded startups as less credible. Importantly, one should not start a startup just because it’s a trend. It’s crucial to conduct a thorough self-assessment to understand your strengths, weaknesses, skills, and passions. Ensure you possess the necessary skills and mindset for entrepreneurship and are genuinely passionate about your idea to stay motivated through tough times. Gain relevant skills and knowledge, seek mentorship, and complement your skillset with co-founders if needed. Understand that success requires hard work, perseverance, and continuous learning, and seek support from family, friends, mentors, and peers. Starting a startup in college can be transformative but requires capability and passion. Avoid following trends blindly. If you believe in your vision and have the skills to achieve it, a startup can be highly rewarding.

I usually encourage PhDs to explore entrepreneurship careers. But in reality, it becomes challenging for PhDs after spending ~5 years in grad school, almost everyone wants stability and a decent income. I believe that every PhD should at least consider volunteering in their local startup ecosystem if they can. Your experiences are highly valuable to the ecosystem. You should share your grad experience (apart from research) with them. A few things you can share/discuss: ➤ Facing Uncertainty - How did you manage it? ➤ Sourcing an Idea - From literature survey to transforming it into a product or manuscript. ➤ Experiencing Failure - Failing many times, but starting again and how did you survive the phase? ➤ Pitching Your Idea - Similar to defending a proposal or your PhD thesis. ➤ Managing a Lab with Limited Resources - Yet still getting the work done Aspiring founders/students and early-stage startups might not have the time to learn these skills on their own. Last month, I interacted with a group of recent engineering graduates who are pursuing their pre-seed incubation under IHFC – READY Program who are eager to become entrepreneurs. It’s encouraging to see aspiring entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and technical expertise. This was the third session in a series under READY Immersion Program; enabling foundational understanding and finer nuances of the business environment, finance, and funding. Engineering education has focused predominantly on technical subjects, it's crucial that engineering students also gain knowledge in commerce, industry, finance, and business to better prepare them for entrepreneurial success. Recommendation for aspiring entrepreneurs with a technical background, here are some key areas they might want to explore to build a well-rounded skill set: 1. Business Fundamentals: Understanding basic business concepts such as business models, market research, and competitive analysis is crucial. Courses or resources in business administration can be beneficial. 2. Finance and Accounting: Knowledge of financial statements, budgeting, and financial planning is essential for managing a business effectively. They should also understand funding options and financial forecasting. 3. Marketing and Sales: Knowing how to market a product, identify target customers, and develop sales strategies is vital for business growth. 4. Legal Considerations: Familiarity with legal aspects such as intellectual property rights, contracts, and company registration can prevent potential legal issues. 5. Leadership and Management: Skills in managing a team, project management, and organizational behavior can help in building and leading a successful startup. 6. Networking and Mentorship: Building a network of contacts in the industry and finding mentors can provide valuable guidance and opportunities. 7. Business Strategy and Planning: Developing a solid business plan and strategy is key to setting goals and achieving success. Encouraging engineers to take courses available on platforms or to collaborate with individuals who have business expertise and significantly boost their chances of entrepreneurial success. I always love when someone posts a series of posts, so why not starting a series myself? Last week was a great week, as it was a first to kick-off the Student Founder Program at the ECE Students. After 3 months of hard work have we developed a complete program that will help students and student founders to become 'Disruptive Entrepreneurs'. While doing a lot of research in the field of Entrepreneurial Education at Universities, did I realize that there is a grand canyon between what founders need and what universities share. My biggest insight was that we don't challenge students enough to figure things out, or on how to 'reverse engineer' a startup case for any problem or challenge in the world. Also that most of our Entrepreneurial Education Programs lack the implementation of tech. It is crazy how they are mainly focused on ideation, but not on how we can use tech + entrepreneurship to create a better world together. Universities do often operate in their academic bubble of research and education, so it was important to me to deliver a true 'founder' experience to the students. They had to feel the 🔥 of a founder and why startup founders can make even more impact than the average politician, executive or consultant (the origin of a business school). In the next series, will I share every week a slide of the kick-off presentation. All slides are created with AI to give an extra layer of tech to it. This first slide started with two questions: ▪︎Who believes the world should be a lot better than it is today? ▪︎Who wants to make impact on this? All students in the room raised their hands and were showing that it is time to turn around what is broken. Tech & Entrepreneurship is the way to make it happen - even as a politician, executive or consultant. Scale-up founders are the new athletes and movie stars, simply because they make impact without just talking about it. Step one is committing to build a better world, so now we can start creating a vision for it. 10-weeks from now should all students be able to design a top-nodge pitchdeck on how they could build a startup to improve the world. Every week will the Students work on one slide of the Pitchdeck. The student can decide to turn it into a startup, or to implement the new learned founder skills into another career. Local investors will screen all the students on their 'investibility' and their ability to solve challenges through a 10M Scale-up. Why 10M?
