Echidna Cams’ Post

Why does it seem that even modern security camera footage is so ordinary? This was an unavoidable question with the quality of recent security camera footage played on the Sydney news. The footage captured an ambitious thief stealing a rare Blood Dragon Tree from the front yard of a home in Box Hill. Thankfully, the plant stolen (and the method used) was very distinctive and the footage was not required to identify the landscaping larcenist. So why does footage from "modern" security systems seem so average? It can be partly related to quality of the system, using cameras with cheaper sensors, low frame rates, and low resolutions, as well as heavily compressing video files (saving bandwidth / storage, but degrading quality). Internet Protocol (IP) cameras add a entire raft of other potential issues that can degrade image quality, including bandwidth limitations, latency issues, weak / intermittent signal, and local network congestion. If this footage was the only evidence of a crime committed, probably the best information that could be obtained of the offender was that they were most likely male (of indeterminate age) with dark shorts, a high vis top, wearing a backpack, and riding an e-bike - hardly a unique identity in greater metropolitan Sydney. The issue of poor image / video quality has figured large in our market research, and rightly so. This is why maximising image / video quality it is one of our priority areas for the development of our products.
