New recruiters, you have to find your own voice. When I started recruiting, I (like many junior recruiters) was a sponge and the person I learned from the most was Chris Batz. I gleaned a TON from him that I still use today. (Thank you, Chris!) What I struggled with was doing my job without sounding like a robot. Chris didn't sound like a robot, but when I copied him, it was clear I wasn't comfortable and as I read from scripts he made for me, I really sounded like one. I wasn't comfortable enough with the legal vernacular and the recruiting vernacular. It took time to find my voice. It took time to get comfortable with the legal recruiting words that now feel like breathing. It took time to relax into the role and know that I'm good at what I do. It took time to realize that attorneys are often very down-to-earth but they need to know you know your stuff. My style of conversation adapts based on who my audience is. I'm professional, but I also love to smile and laugh. Some attorneys are happy to do the same, others keep it strictly professional or direct and I meet them with a similar approach. Learning your voice and getting comfortable in your skin takes time. It's made recruiting way more fun for me as I've authentically shown up. The clients who like me best are also down-to-earth, leave the fluff stuff out, smile, and enjoy life people. But really, I enjoy what I do and it shows and that speaks to all different kinds of clients that hire attorneys. #legalrecruiting #generalcounsel #inhouserecruiting
