🌍🌐 It’s been an exciting week for Destination Earth (#DestinE). It was the second time since its launch that the DestinE initiative of the European Commission was featured at a COP panel. 💬 “The panel highlighted the value of digital twin information, like the one produced in DestinE Climate Change Digital Twin for sensitive regions such as the Arctic regarding climate change,” concludes Irina Sandu, Director for Destination Earth at ECMWF, about the COP29 Azerbaijan panel on global and regional approaches to cryosphere and related climate challenges. Irina Sandu also emphasised how the DestinE Climate Digital Twin (Climate DT) is a game-changer, offering a capability to perform multi-decadal climate projections both regularly (e.g. yearly) and on demand. The discussion highlighted using this data to address Arctic climate challenges, with contributions from experts like Avijâja Rosing-Olsen (Ministry of Agriculture, Self-Sufficiency, Energy and Environment of the Government of Greenland), and Sea Ice Scientist Till Soya Rasmussen (Danish Meteorological Institute DMI). 📽️ Watch the panel session and find more information ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ekst7yBW

Game-changer. "Catastrophic" likely to be the most common adjective to describe increasing climate driven events. https://lnkd.in/gq2mkp7a report ... the implications are game-changers:

📈 The rate of global sea level rise doubled during the past three decades ➡️ A new study at Communications Earth & Environment shows that the global mean sea level rise amounted to 4.5 mm per year due to warming #oceans and melting land #ice, more than twice the rate of 2.1 mm/year observed at the start of satellite data in 1993. 😎 Check out the full study here: https://lnkd.in/eCx_EKMw #sealevelrise #oceans #warming #climate

The Arctic Ocean sea ice is shrinking even faster than previously thought. The Arctic may start to see its first ice-free days within the current decade. Even under a low-emission scenario, the Arctic would be ice-free between August and October by 2100. Research into climate interventions may be critical to keep ecosystems safe from near term climate warming. ❄ To complement our carousel from yesterday on the fundamentals of #permafrost, we would like to share this educational explanatory video. It highlights the essential components of this frozen soil and the consequences of its thawing on our climate. 🔬 As Merritt Turetsky, professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and ecosystem ecologist, pointed out a few weeks ago: "Permafrost stores more than twice the amount of carbon found in the Earth's atmosphere. As the Arctic warms faster than the rest of the planet, the future of this carbon stockpile is uncertain. A portion will be released as methane, a powerful greenhouse gas." 🌡 Indeed, the Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as the global average (Pörtner et al., 2019; Rantanen et al., 2021). 🔄 When permafrost thaws, the organic matter it contains decomposes, releasing carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases contribute to climate change in a vicious cycle: the warmer the climate, the more permafrost melts, releasing even more carbon. This is what we refer to as the "feedback loop" we mentioned yesterday. Enjoy watching! 🎥 Source : DWPlanet A.

Delve into this crucial article by BBC News shedding light on the unprecedented warming of the world's oceans, driven by the impacts of climate change. The oceans are facing a historical year of high temperatures which is having far-reaching consequences on marine ecosystems and weather patterns. Understanding the gravity of this situation is essential in addressing the urgent need for global action effects of climate change on our planet's precious oceans. Let's work together to protect our marine environment for current and future generations. #ClimateChange #SaveOurOceans #ActNow https://lnkd.in/dyFwXCpd

New BBC analysis shows that world's oceans are no longer Earth's 'get-out-of-jail card' when it comes to climate change. OCEAN supports a wide range of locally-led projects that can play an important role in addressing the detrimental impacts of ocean warming to the marine environment & coastal communities worldwide. https://loom.ly/Uau9y7o oceangrants.org.uk #climatechange #oceanwarming
