The Arctic Ocean sea ice is shrinking even faster than previously thought. The Arctic may start to see its first ice-free days within the current decade. Even under a low-emission scenario, the Arctic would be ice-free between August and October by 2100. It highlights the essential components of this frozen soil and the consequences of its thawing on our climate. 🔬 As Merritt Turetsky, professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and ecosystem ecologist, pointed out a few weeks ago: "Permafrost stores more than twice the amount of carbon found in the Earth's atmosphere. As the Arctic warms faster than the rest of the planet, the future of this carbon stockpile is uncertain. A portion will be released as methane, a powerful greenhouse gas." 🌡 Indeed, the Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as the global average (Pörtner et al., 2019; Rantanen et al., 2021). 🔄 When permafrost thaws, the organic matter it contains decomposes, releasing carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. These greenhouse gases contribute to climate change in a vicious cycle: the warmer the climate, the more permafrost melts, releasing even more carbon.
