There is growing optimism in China‘s green transition at a time when it is being asked to take the lead on global climate action as nearly half of experts polled by a climate think tank say the country’s carbon dioxide emissions have already peaked or will do so in 2025. In a survey released Tuesday by the research group Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), 44% of academic and industrial climate experts predict that China’s CO2 emissions will peak no later than 2025. Just 21% of experts responded in the same way in the study conducted last year. #ChinaGreenTransition #ClimateAction #CarbonEmissions #CO2Peak #GlobalClimateLeadership #ClimateOptimism #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #CarbonNeutral #GreenFuture #climatechangeisreal Read on - https://lnkd.in/gMjfGVE7

🌍 Exciting news from the latest Climate Action Progress Report! 🎉 The EU has successfully reduced its net GHG emissions by 8% in 2023. This is a crucial milestone in the journey toward meeting 2030 Climate Targets, and it shows that progress is on track. 🚀 Here’s what it means: Per capita emissions have been almost halved since their peak. 🌱 The EU has reduced emissions by 37% since 1990, all while growing GDP by an impressive 68%. 💡 This proves that economic growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. The EU is leading the way in showing that climate action doesn’t have to come at the expense of economic development. 🌍 The cost of climate change A new study by Maximilian Kotz, Anders Levermann, and Leonie Wenz estimates that climate change damages could cost the global economy $38 trillion per year by 2049—a number that dwarfs the $6 trillion needed to meet the Paris Climate Agreement goals. The price of not transitioning to green energy far exceeds the cost of action. Yet, wealthy, high-emission nations continue to hesitate funding the global green energy transition. 🏭 Human activities have intensified the natural #GreenhouseEffect, leading to additional warming that outpaces the ability of natural systems and human civilization to adapt. Global greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions show significant disparities between countries. Historically, the US and the EU27 have been major emitters, responsible for 24% and 17% of cumulative #CO2Emissions since 1750. ♻️ Leaders must introduce tailored climate policies to address the unique emission profiles and economic contexts of each country. But how can this be done? Discover more environmental insights in our #TrendCompendium: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dNUz-ndx #RolandBerger #GHGEmissions #EnvironmentalPolicy #ClimateAction

Adaption and resilience required to withstand what is now inevitable… “Even if countries were to deliver on their emission reduction pledges, set under the Paris agreement, the UN Environment Programme estimates that the UK 🇬🇧 will still see at least a 2.5°C rise in global temperature. For the UK, the new reality is that 40°C temperatures are possible and eventually will be commonplace, and the country must adapt urgently. “Adaptation means making changes to social, economic and ecological systems to reduce the impact of events like heatwaves.” The article below by Ben Vivian and Emma Hill in The Conversation UK is worth a read - and then requires some urgent action! #sustainabilityleadership SDG 13

Australian Climate Change Authority on Sept. 5 released a sectoral pathways review recommending the expansion of the Australian Carbon Credit Unit scheme and the establishment of a National Carbon Market Strategy. These initiatives aim to streamline carbon pricing while enhancing technology-based removals as a pathway to achieving net zero by 2050. 🔗 Read more about the implications for Australia’s emissions reduction targets and carbon pricing! I'm one of several academics who have contributed short pieces to the journal One Earth on the topic of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategies. I argue that we need to pay attention to the discourses around CDR, and carbon markets in particular, given these discourses end up shaping what happens (or not) in the real world (e.g https://lnkd.in/gjiZaE8H). Looking at this map, I’d also say that those areas need to prepare for an influx of people moving there. This has already been seen during the pandemic to Sheffield, where gi corridors are teaming with people (too many for a quiet walk) and house prices are unaffordable for most people. The other issues not picked up by the article are that while trees do cool cities, they need time and nurture to get to a decent size to shade heat into windows or at any distance. They do need to be a decent size and lifespan rather than the type largely being planted now. I’ll post the link to the greenup results again in a few days. Large shading and cooling trees please, maintenance budgets and skilled, well paid (so they can afford to live where they are needed) contractors are essential to building resilience to manmade climate change.

National Determined Contributions. National Determined Contributions indicates the efforts taken by each country in Greehouse gas reduction. Efforts taken to reduce pollution and sustainable use of resources. Whom to Submit NDC Report According to Article 4 of Paris Agreement every Counrty has to submit the report in 5 years to United Nations Climate Change Registry. Every report submitted should be progressive. This will ensure that each country becomes more ambitious in achieving climate justice. When to Submit Report Every 5 years countries are required to submit the report. https://lnkd.in/gsf7SEDm Jessica Besch (she/her) #UnitedNationsClimateChange #ClimateRealityEurope #NationalDeterminedContributions #CenterforEuropeanStudies #ChristUniversityLavasa

Join me for a hybrid event April 15 as Future Matters unveils surprising new research on the EU's climate mitigation potential. Despite contributing only 7% of global greenhouse gas pollution, we've discovered the European Union could realize billions of additional tons of global decarbonization through just 8 politically achievable, but currently underrated, policies. Our research is based on input from over 100 policy experts and data from over 500 publications.
