🌍 "No business on a dead planet": This is one of the phrases heard last week at COP16 Colombia🎙️ The first week of #COP16 was intense! More than 190 countries came together to discuss critical issues in #biodiversity and renew their commitment to #nature protection and the sustainable use of natural resources. Our experts Sabrina Collin Capon, Biodiversity Manager and Jeanne Barreyre, Research Consultant on Nature-Based Solutions & Biodiversity are on site and share their highlights of the first week: 📈 Progress towards biodiversity targets 🎯 The presentation of national plans to achieve the 23 targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework 🌐 Discussions on access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing, with no definitive conclusions yet 🌳 The awareness of companies and their commitment to the implementation of sustainable practices 🌿And now? The second week of COP16 promises to be just as decisive. We will continue to advocate for ambitious action and innovative solutions to: - Assess progress in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal framework - Mobilise funding to achieve these objectives - Ensure fair and equitable sharing of the utilisation of genetic resources All companies depend on the proper functioning of ecosystems. It is time to invent new economic models that respect nature 🍃 Stay tuned for our complete COP16 recap📰

A great reflection and narrative, "No business on a dead planet"; make saving planet your core business pillar and embed it at the core of your business model, as there is no business on a dead planet, makes perfect sense. Out of ignorance, post Industrial Revolution, very quickly we have breached the limits of earth systems—breaching planetary boundaries—mobilized at least two to three tipping points (out of 16 known tipping points—WEF, Prof. Johan R). We have put most of the planetary boundaries at risk as per UN reports, we have visibility of heat waves and devastation by the hurricanes which are becoming more frequent and intense, impacting life of people and destroying the biodiversity. We have also put known and unknown biodiversity hotspots at risk. We must improve our knowledge and get aware of the context we operate at and respect the most valuable infrastructure provided by nature for the survival of life on our green and blue planet...we must start respecting the infinitely valuable nature and nature systems and stop destroying it without giving any thought...Time to think...and Act... Thanks #EcoAct for sharing the thoughts from #COP16 in Columbia. Keep posting the key messages. Look forward to the key themes and ways forward to tackle nature and biodiversity loss...

This week has started #COP16 on #biodiversity in Cali (Colombia) & we are there as a research centre!!! 🌸 🦫 🦚 Which key points will be discussed and why #science voice has to be considered? 👇 🖊️ First, remember that the last COP on biodiversity became popular because it was agreed to restore 30% of nature by 2030 🌿 For the first time, 196 countries signed the 30x30 agreement to protect the planet's natural ecosystems and biodiversity! 🤝 📌 Now, COP16 wants to put this agreement into action by designing a roadmap to make this goal real. The most critical points to decide are: 1⃣ how to invest the economic resources & 2⃣ how to monitor biodiversity to make sure that biodiversity loss is actually being reversed. 🔎 🌏 ✅ From CREAF, we attend as a research centre involved in scientific projects, such as RESPIN project, and international initiatives on biodiversity, such as IPBES, and also because we provide scientific information to various governments and government representatives. 📸 💫 Look at the photo of our dream team there: Alicia Pérez-Porro, PhD, Anna de las Heras Carles, Dani Villero Pi and Lluís Brotons!!!

The 21st of October, The United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16) kicks off in Colombia. 🌎 This year’s Biodiversity COP will build on the historic 30 by 30 deal agreed at COP15 in 2022, aiming to protect 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 🌱 Setting up a system to track progress on 23 key environmental goals. 🌱 Finding the money needed, including changing harmful subsidies and raising $200 billion a year by 2030. 🌱 Creating a fair system for sharing the benefits from using genetic information, like DNA data, from different countries. As human activity is pushing one million species of plants and animals towards extinction, the conference is more important than ever, and I’m looking forward to following it from the sidelines. COP16 will be attended by participants from over 190 countries. #biodiversity #cop16 #cop16colombia #biodiversityplan

Biodiversity Pulse is heading to Cali for the #COP16! To gear up for the awaited UN conference, Sergio Colombo and I published a couple of previews on Carbon Pulse, trying to sum up some of the main topics. 🌳 A temperature check – Delegates from nearly 200 countries will gather in Colombia in what observers call "a temperature check" for the world's pledges on nature, amid political divisions on finance mobilisation threatening to hamper the implementation of the GBF. https://lnkd.in/dfEGxKcM 🫰 Biodiversity markets – Scaling the voluntary biodiversity credit market will be among the core topics of discussion, as standards and early movers see the summit as an opportunity to unlock corporate demand. https://lnkd.in/dgrGGhbX See you there!

🌄COP16 on biodiversity takes place in less than 100 days. https://lnkd.in/eq8zE2Jt ✍ Looking at this perspective, Business for Nature confirms the signing by more than 130 businesses and financial institutions of the Statement “Renewed policy ambition on nature”. https://lnkd.in/exHC2yC4 📝 This statement can be accessed here https://lnkd.in/eERXK3a3 👉 Group AFNOR, which signed the statement, continues its voluntary commitment alongside ISO/TC 331 on biodiversity (https://lnkd.in/euaiXa8P) following its participation in COP 15 in Montreal in December 2022, turning towards COP 16. 🌾 The AFNOR Group here expresses its support so that the ambitions of the United Nations meet the challenges. Voluntary standardization contributes to the design and development of methodological frameworks and good practices, recognized by the majority, through ISO standards. 🌎 The involvement of everyone, in particular businesses and financial institutions, for resilient trajectories is the basis of a healthy planet. #COP16 #Businessfornature #ISOTC331 #AFNORBIODIV #OREE

On my way to the UN Biodiversity Summit in Cali, Colombia (CBD COP16). 🌎 Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse rank as one of the top five threats humanity will face in the next 10 years (WEF, 2024). 📈 Progress on the goals and targets set in the GBF is critical. 👉 A key focus area will be the alignment on priority metrics and targets to demonstrate accountability and enable action. In the DNV paper ‘Navigating the Biodiversity Disclosure Landscape’, we provide an overview of the opportunities and challenges for companies to understand their environmental impacts and dependencies and transition towards nature-positive business models. Can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/dfHdM5hB Looking forward to discussing these topics and many more at COP16! As COP16 kicks off in Colombia, we need to remember the important role of the private sector in the achievement of GBF targets. Non-financial disclosures are a first step for companies to understand dependencies and impacts on nature, and identify the opportunities to transform to sustainable business models. Our paper "Navigating the Biodiversity Disclosure Landscape" provides an overview of: 🌏 Biodiversity reporting guidelines and standards 📊 Biodiversity metrics 🚀 Monitoring technologies and the application of AI ...with emphasis on the marine environment 🐟 You can download it here https://lnkd.in/dfHdM5hB #COP16 #Sustainability #Biodiversity #ESG

Delegates from nearly 200 nations have begun two weeks of talks on how to implement the 2022 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), with questions around how to raise more funds to reverse nature loss quickly taking centre stage. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the official opening ceremony on Sunday called on countries to make significant investments in nature to make sure the world meets the GBF funding goal of the Global North raising $20 billion by 2025. COP President and Colombian Environment Minister Susana Muhamad continued in the same vein when briefing journalists at the COP16 venue in Cali on Monday morning. Biodiversity Pulse has four reporters on the ground this week: Stian Reklev, Sergio Colombo, Giada Ferraglioni, and Alejandra Padín-Dujon. Don't hesitate to get in touch with them. The Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 taking place in Australia is super important in the context of the next UN Biodiversity COP, COP16 Colombia, that is happening in a couple of weeks in Cali. Under the leadership of Australian Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek, this is the first ever conference that is addressing how countries transition from a nature-negative situation into a nature-positive one. It is also bringing topics that will help countries to better understand the concrete actions that are needed to meet the targets agreed upon at the CBD COP15 two years ago. In this context, the Global Environment Facility is a key strategic partner to all countries, particularly developing countries, in providing easy access to financial resources for the implementation of these targets. Since COP15, the GEF has been able to mobilize over $2.4 billion in activities that are totally aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. For countries to go from nature negative to nature positive, the following four elements are key: 1) protect 30% of the ocean and the land, 2) restore 30% of the lands and oceans that have been highly degraded, 3) adopt best practices, particularly on how we produce our food, and 4) mobilize more efficient resources from all sources at the same time that countries address the issue of perverse incentives and subsidies. These four elements have been widely discussed here in Sydney and will hopefully contribute to the vision, agenda and goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
