That’s a classic scam 🛑 Remember, legit lotteries and sweepstake winnings will NEVER ask for money upfront. Stay safe and always verify before you believe. Here are some common signs of lottery prize scams: 1. Unexpected Wins: You get notified about winning a lottery or sweepstake you never entered. 2. Upfront Fees: They ask you to pay a fee or provide personal information to claim your prize. 3. Urgency: There’s pressure to act quickly or lose the prize. 4. Unprofessional Communication: Look out for poor grammar, spelling mistakes and generic greetings. 5. Requests for Personal Information: They ask for sensitive information like your Social Security number or bank details. 6. The use of credit cards brings up a host of interesting questions with regards to Halacha, especially when it comes to their use on Shabbat. Now, to avoid confusion, we know that using them is forbidden. They involve electricity, receipts, and they represent transactions with money. But that last one is an interesting point - they merely 'represent' those transactions, without any actual money changing hands. And what about automatic payments that get debited on Shabbat, like a payment for your Netflix subscription? Don't worry, says Din Online, those are ok because you initiated the payment on a weekday, and have nothing further to do with its debit cycle in the future.
