I didn't expect a tour of Wootten's workshop would turn into a Tuesday Trash Talk post. But 10 minutes in, bootmaker Jess said "we only produce one bin of waste a fortnight!”. Some households probably produce more. In the circular economy (CE) world, Wootten would be seen as a CE superstar, ranking pretty high on the ladder of circularity. And it's apparently small businesses like Wootten who are going to drive a lot of Australia's CE transition. “Australia is a country of SMEs,” Samantha Read from Chemistry Australia said at last year's Circularity conference. Planet Ark's Ryan Collins said that although there's no easy starting point resource for SMEs (yet), he reckons the first step all businesses need to do is get to know CE, through resources like: • ACE Hub’s knowledge hub • Planet Ark's Business Recycling Toolkit • The ASPIRE marketplace • Hepburn Shire Council's Circular Hepburn - Business Toolkit • Plant Chicago's food-focused Toolkit for Small Business • PACE's Circular Metrics for Business • And the CE adoption in SMEs article, ‘going beyond waste reduction ’ The links to these resources are in the post, plus some fun info and pics of Wootten. #circulareconomy #reuse #sustainability #smallbusinesses #SMEs

What’s wrong with kitchen countertops? The kitchen industry is responsible for very high levels of waste, and at evotops®, we did want to contribute to this problem. That’s how we created evotops®, an eco-friendly kitchen worktop that’s made of up to 40% reclaimed materials that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Got any questions about our worktops? Ask away! #kitchen #newkitchen #kitchenworktops #sustainability

Gilmoora House loves green. It’s not only embedded in our new logo and all over our building in the shape of plants, being green is something we’re really proud of. You may have read that we’ve recently achieved a Planet Mark Certification for our efforts towards our Net Zero goals, and that’s taken a lot of work behind the-scenes, but there are a lot of daily adjustments that we’ve implemented for everybody to notice and engage. ♻️ We’ve extended our recycling procedures to include glass, batteries, toner, and even coffee waste, increasing the variety of bins across the floors and ensuring their rightful management by cleaners and users. 💡 97% of the lightbulbs in the building have been switched to LED to improve our energy usage. They’re safer, sturdier, and last longer. A LED bulb can last 30 times longer than an incandescent one! 🪧 We think it’s very important to involve our members on this journey. After all, they’re a huge part of Gilmoora House’s identity and success. Besides the number of recycling points throughout the building, we’ve also installed signage with hands-on advice on how to combat the climate crisis. 🪪 We’ve moved on from physical access cards. Not only they were easily misplaced and lost, creating waste, they were also made of non-recyclable plastic. We’ve invested in a brand-new digital access system that allows our members to unlock doors and book meeting rooms straight from their mobile phones. ☕️ We purchase coffee from trusted partners who source it responsibly and work closely with Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. They have a strict environmental policy and their sustainability ethos matches ours. What may look like a drop in the ocean is vital to the survival of our planet. If you’re interested in learning more about our long-term vision for a brighter future, you can head over to our website or send us an email at enquiries@gilmoorahouse.com . . . . . #sustainability #respinsibleconsumption #recycling #energy #digitalaccess #coffee #responsiblysourced #london #westend #flexibleoffice #flexiblespace #officespace #offices #fitzrovia #fitzroviaquarter #officesearch #propertysearch

When it comes to educating ourselves on ESG - consider us bookworms. 📖🍎 As proud members of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, we are committed to managing balcony sustainability from the front lines. Our dedication to sustainability at Sapphire extends to reducing embodied carbon, carbon emissions, improving biodiversity, and addressing balcony sustainability. Our Next Generation Cassettes™ significantly reduce construction time on-site and minimise crane usage, are lighter than steel, easier to transport and simpler to install - resulting in more energy-efficient solutions and a decrease in waste production from manufacture to end-user use. Furthermore, our balconies are designed to be almost entirely recyclable. The technology we use allows for easy removal at the end of their lifespan, promoting disassembly and recycling of components. This closed-loop approach aligns with our commitment to sustainability and waste reduction. 🔗 Visit our website to explore how we are implementing these sustainable practices and managing balcony sustainability effectively: https://buff.ly/41MMK8F #Sustainability #Carbon #Biodiversity #SupplyChain #Waste #Construction #Training

📣 If we want to build a more sustainable world, we have to make it easier to do the right thing. Full-size dumpsters make it too easy to throw anything and everything into the trash. We want to make it easy to take things OUT of the trash. So on every Cottonwood jobsite, we have dedicated piles for clean wood, EPS foam packaging, reusable building materials, etc. And then a small dumpster, so that if anything ends up in the dumpster that shouldn’t be there, it’s easy to pull it out. Earth Day is a great unifier. But we’re more concerned with what happens the other 364 days. If you have a process that makes your business more sustainable, we’d love to hear about it! #greenbuilding #sustainableconstruction #wastereduction #reduceresuserecycle #customhomes #customhomebuilder #generalcontractor #earthday #earthday2024 #earthdayeveryday

When recycling comes to mind, you might envision sorting bottles and cardboard in your kitchen or at the airport. But why should you care? Do these small acts really make a difference? Let's shift our focus to recycling in the construction industry. What are the benefits for contractors and general contractors (GCs) when they consider recycling? 1️⃣ Convenience: Contrary to popular belief, recycling doesn't have to be complicated or time-consuming. At Rockwood, we strive to make recycling as easy as possible. Simply let us know the size of the roll-off or compactor bin you need, and we'll promptly pick it up when full and replace it with a fresh one. You don't have to worry about separating materials either, as we handle all the sorting once the bin is back at our site. We've got your convenience covered! 2️⃣ Cost: Recycling construction materials can bring economic benefits. For instance, recycling concrete can save contractors and construction companies money on disposal fees and the purchase of new materials. This makes construction projects more cost-effective and sustainable, contributing to your bottom line. Saving money while being environmentally responsible—now that's a win-win! 3️⃣ Stewardship: We have a responsibility to be good stewards of what we've been given and leave a positive impact. Part of that entails finding better ways to dispose of waste, not just avoiding harm but actually making a positive contribution. Take timber-frame construction projects, for example. They often generate numerous cut ends and scraps that are typically sent to landfills, where they decompose over several years. At Rockwood, we transform all that wood waste into clean electricity to power the Lebanon water treatment plant. Perhaps next time you hear the word "recycling," you'll consider how it can benefit you. If you want to learn more about how we can assist you with recycling, feel free to reach out! Together, let's embrace a sustainable future. #recycling #recycle #upcycling #sustainability #ecofriendly #environment #reuse #waste #wastemanagement #sustainable #recycled #plastic #nature #scrapmetal #demolition #upcycle #eco #climatechange #scrap #circulareconomy #construction

Gerflor and Kenbrock are proud Foundation Members of the ResiLoop Project in Australia. ResiLoop represents the collaborative effort led by the Australian Resilient Flooring Association Inc ARFA to reduce waste and enhance recycling capabilities as part of a circular economy for resilient flooring products. ResiLoop’s objectives are to reduce the level of resilient flooring heading to landfill by: 1. Enabling recovery and recycling of resilient floorcoverings in Australia at scale through participation in the scheme by a majority of product distributors and flooring installers. 2. Building onshore recycling capacity by researching and developing new end applications for the recyclate, encouraging investment in technologies and employment in the recycling sector, and supplying recyclate to local manufacturers to reduce virgin material consumption. 3. Driving sector-wide behaviour changes that contribute to the circular economy by informing product development and engaging manufacturers, distributors, specifiers, flooring contractors, recyclers and consumers.
