Still mulling over yet another compelling set of lectures from the Environmental Innovation module of my Sustainability apprenticeship with Cranfield University … Kicking off with Francis Hassard and the importance of sanitation and all the working parts required to keep us hydrated and safe! As someone working for a business heavily involved in the utilities sector you can’t help but feel proud of the service provided by our teams on the ground to help make this happen for citizens. It’s a big deal! 🚰 Next up a reality check with Jim Harris and the importance of nature and complex ecosystems and the services they provide. Not sure what I mean? 🐸 This clip gives some good insight – https://lnkd.in/evREqGBX Finishing off with Orsolya Ihasz, PhD and Eco-Innovation - and the need for trial and error and continuous improvement – basically go big or go home! 💡 A lesson I’m learning from so many of my colleagues at Barhale Ltd, our innovative suppliers and fellow students as they push towards being more sustainable – some for the business and others for the planet – either way better for the environment. Not an easy task when you need time to give things a go; client demands are upon you; and there are somewhat limited funds to allow for change 📆 🚦 📉 I guess the ultimate message is that there is so much to do - for us all. But it’s without doubt that we must be less wasteful and more appreciative of nature’s gifts. At Barhale Ltd we’re becoming more mindful of the role we can play in supporting biodiversity and eco-system services through nature-based solutions, investment in nature positive initiatives, raising staff awareness through dedicated training and campaigns ⏳ With this in mind, this month Barhale Ltd are promoting PlantLife’s No Mow May movement with staff – not having to get the mower out for a month can't be such a bad thing – allowing wildflowers to bloom, providing essential habitat for pollinators like bees, butterflies and other insects and in turn helping to restore balance to our local ecosystems. Microplastics are of growing concern, both for human health and the broader ecology. With millions of tonnes of plastic waste entering the marine ecosystem ever year, solutions are needed urgently — and while initiatives to prevent the waste from entering the ecosystem in the first place, by moving away from single-use plastics and implementing stronger recycling requirements, are a vital step, they do nothing for the waste already floating around our oceans. The Clearbot is an autonomous surface drone. This innovative system cruises through waterways, autonomously collecting floating waste. Equipped with sensors and cameras, it navigates efficiently, identifying and collecting plastic debris and other pollutants. The Clearbot's design minimises disturbances to marine life while effectively cleaning up water bodies near coastlines. Since Clearbot operations began, that have conducted continuous research in the laboratory and the field, aiming to optimize the positive impact consistently. Clearbot, current ocean cleaning technology, has deterrents, cameras, escape aids, and other features to minimize risk to marine wildlife. Clearbot also have trained independent observers on board the vessels each trip to monitor any interactions with protected species (such as turtles or whales) in the area. Monitoring data has confirmed that the operations are having only minimal effects on the environment.
