Exploring the Potential of Castor Beans Castor, a significant non-edible oilseed crop from the Euphorbiaceae family, holds immense value across various sectors such as industry, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. The unique chemical and physical properties of castor oil, attributed to the presence of a hydroxyl group and double bonds in ricinoleic acid, make it a crucial raw material in industry while providing stability against oxidation. With its high oil content (50%), relatively high crop yield, and minimal competition with food crops, castor oil aids in reducing life-cycle emissions. A life cycle analysis revealed that biodiesel made from castor oil slashes greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to petroleum diesel. Due to the widespread availability and easy cultivation of the castor oil plant, it can be integrated into subsistence agriculture programs as a potential oilseed feedstock for biodiesel production. This initiative aims to harness the untapped potential of castor oil as an alternative source for the future biodiesel industry.
