It’s been another record-breaking year for Canada, too often for the wrong reasons, such as how the country is on track to have the warmest year on record. This year saw politicians and polluters play roulette with our planet. Many of us experienced firsthand the human cost of climate chaos when extreme weather events, like the devastating Jasper wildfire, impacted communities across Canada. And while there is much to do in the year ahead, it is important to remember that 2024 saw its share of success and progress too. Celebrating these wins is crucial. This is one way to prevent burnout and hold onto hope — even as hard times test our resolve. Something that brings the team at Ecojustice hope is each one of you. We are so grateful to the Ecojustice community — our clients, colleagues, collaborators, donors, supporters — for fighting alongside us. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sharing a selection of environmental wins that we have achieved together in 2024. https://hubs.ly/Q02_6SZD0

The EPA’s Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants program (Community Change Grants) has announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for approximately $2 billion dollars in Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funds in environmental and climate justice activities to benefit disadvantaged communities through projects that reduce pollution, increase community climate resilience, and build community capacity to address environmental and climate justice challenges. These place-based investments will be focused on community-driven initiatives to be responsive to community and stakeholder input. They are designed to deliver on the transformative potential of the IRA for communities most adversely and disproportionately impacted by climate change, legacy pollution, and historical disinvestments. 🌍 I’ve just completed the 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 & 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 with Climate Emergency UK CIC! 🎉 This 4-week volunteer programme provided a deep dive into how councils are tackling the climate and ecological crises, and how we as volunteers can help track their progress. Thank you Cathy Driscoll, my fellow Sustainists (formerly Sustaineers Consultants) partner, for suggesting this initiatve and also volunteering for the second time. 🔑 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: "𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝘁𝘀 needed rely on people and businesses taking up low-carbon solutions - decisions that are made at a local and individual level. 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲. Local authorities have powers or influence over roughly a third of emissions in their local areas." (Source: CCC: Local Authorities and the Sixth Carbon Budget) Councils have the power to impact around 30% of emissions in their areas, but with the average score in the 2023 Action Scorecards at just 32%, there's so much more that can be done. That’s why I’m excited to help develop the 2025 Scorecards and see real climate action progress! 🌱If you're interested in local policy, climate initiatives, or supporting meaningful change, check out Climate Emergency UK CIC's work and volunteer opportunities. Together, we can push councils to take climate action seriously and make a tangible impact! #ClimateAction #LocalGovernment #Sustainability #VolunteerWork #ClimateEmergency Leena Ceccolini Caroline Vienot

🌍 Exciting News for Climate Action in County Monaghan! 🌍 We are delighted to announce a significant investment in community climate action. Under the Community Climate Action Fund €392,000 has been secured to support 11 local climate action projects across County Monaghan. This investment will empower our communities to implement sustainable solutions and make a tangible impact on reducing their carbon footprint. In addition, nearly €398,000 has been secured for the Shared Island Climate Action initiative. This funding will support collaboration between 6 Monaghan communities and their counterparts in Northern Ireland, fostering collective efforts to meet climate and energy targets across the island. Funded by the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications, the projects focus on the climate action themes of energy, transport, food & waste, shopping and recycling, and local environment and climate action. These initiatives are crucial for the implementation of the council’s recently adopted five-year Climate Action Plan. This plan aims to position County Monaghan as a national leader in climate action, enhancing the effectiveness of local and place-based climate initiatives. Together, we are making strides towards a greener, more sustainable future. Stay tuned for updates on these exciting projects and the positive changes they will bring to our community! 🌱💪 #ClimateActionMonaghan #WereTakingClimateAction

📢 GIVE NATURE A VOICE 📢 🐝🦫🦀🦉 Thousands of individuals will be uniting for nature at a legal and family-friendly demonstration in London this Sat 22 June 2024. It is backed by a wide-range of nature, wildlife and climate groups and campaigners, including Chris Packham, and will call on all political parties to take action to restore nature and tackle climate change in the UK, as one of the worst nations for nature loss: 🌿A pay rise for nature - Farmers manage 70% of UK land and have a huge role to play in supporting environmental recovery. But they need more support. We want to see the nature and climate-friendly farming budget doubled. 🌿Make polluters pay - Big businesses; from water, to retail, to energy, all contribute to environmental decline. We want new rules to make them contribute to nature and climate recovery, and an end to new fossil fuels. 🌿More space for nature - Just 3% of English land and 8% of waters are properly protected for nature and wildlife. To meet UK nature and climate commitments we need to expand and improve protected areas, and ensure public land and National Parks contribute more to recovery. 🌿A right to a healthy environment - Limited access to nature, and pollution in the air and water, affects everyone’s health. We’re calling for a commitment to an Environmental Rights Bill, which would drive better decisions for nature, improve public health and access to high-quality nature. 🌿Fair and effective climate action - We cannot save nature without solving the climate crisis. We want to see investment in warm homes and lower bills by increasing home energy efficiency, supporting active travel and public transport, and replacing polluting fossil fuels with affordable renewables to ensure we at least halve UK emissions by 2030. Last week, we were proud to sponsor CEDA - Committee for Economic Development of Australia's 'Securing Australia's Water Future' event in Perth. Suzanne Brown facilitated the discussion with the Hon. Simone McGurk, Pat Donovan from Water Corporation and Nicole Lockwood from Infrastructure WA. Our key takeaways from the discussion were: - Water is a critical enabler of state development and is the connector for industry, community, society, emphasising the need for explicit acknowledgement of water. - Closing the gap for remote Indigenous communities' water and sanitation services is a priority. - Climate change shapes, and will continue to shape, the way we approach 'cost and benefit' development business cases. - While the transition to net zero has costs, the cost of doing nothing is even more and, therefore, not an option. #WaterSecurity #FutureofWater #PowerofCommitment

Interesting The Irish Times article highlighting how Ireland has launched a new voluntary certification for peatland restoration, allowing farmers and landowners to demonstrate environmental benefits and attract funding for projects that restore carbon-rich, biodiverse peatlands. Developed by Peatland Finance Ireland (PFI), the initiative could prevent up to 2 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually & restoring 700,000 hectares annually. Backed by Amazon’s Right Now Climate Fund and EU support, the certification, due to launch next year, will meet international standards, with independent auditors validating ecosystem improvements. In May 2024, #EGT signed an exclusive 12-month option to investigate the potential to develop a 1,370-acre site primarily comprising of blanket peatland, located in county Donegal in the northwest of Ireland. This carbon sink programme has the potential to generate carbon credits in Ireland. ✍️Kevin O'Sullivan Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eHsCWUyu #EGT #Peatland #ClimateChange #Sustainability #CarbonEmissions

We're excited to be one of more than 200 organisations supporting the hashtag hashtag#RestoreNatureNow march, happening this Saturday in London. We're listed alongside many incredible organisations such as Friends of the Earth, National Trust, The Woodland Trust, Business Declares, Real Farming Trust, The Climate Coalition and many more. The March has five clear aims: 1 - Pay rise for Nature🐛 Farmers manage 70% of UK land, but they need more support. We want to see the nature and climate-friendly farming budget doubled. 2 - Make polluters pay 🐟 Big businesses all further environmental decline. We want new rules to make them contribute to nature and climate recovery, and an end to new fossil fuels. 3 - More space for nature 🦋 Just 3% of English land and 8% of waters are properly protected for nature and wildlife. To meet UK nature and climate commitments we need to expand and improve protected areas, and ensure public land and National Parks contribute more to recovery. 4 - A right to a healthy environment 🐝 We’re calling for an Environmental Rights Bill which would drive better decisions for nature, improve public health and access to nature. 5 - Fair and effective climate action🌳 We want investment in warm homes and lower bills by increasing home energy efficiency, supporting active travel and public transport, and replacing polluting fossil fuels with affordable renewables to ensure we at least halve UK emissions by 2030.
