This year the federal ministers of environment and health agreed to assess whether naphthenic acids, a dangerous component in tar sands tailings ponds, are toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). This positive decision came in response to a formal request submitted by environmental groups, including Ecojustice and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, to assess the harms caused by toxic naphthenic acids, given their known environmental and health impacts. In 2025 we will continue to fight for healthy communities. Dive into our latest blog on the dangers of pesticide overuse. ⬇️ https://hubs.ly/Q02_QvLW0

Taiwan is taking a significant step towards environmental protection and ozone layer preservation by replacing methyl bromide with ethyl formate (eFume) as a potential alternative for quarantine protocols. This transition to a generally regarded as safe substance (GRAS), ETHYL FORMATE, will significantly reduce the emission of METHYL BROMIDE -the ozone-depleting chemical from 40 tonnes to 0 tonnes. Our collaboration with the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture(APHIA) and Ecove has made this possible. This initiative marks a significant step towards protecting the ozone layer! Let's all do our part to protect the environment! 🌍🛡️ #EnvironmentalProtection #OzoneLayerPreservation https://lnkd.in/gxHBt-3z

⚠️#PFAS "forever chemicals" present in all of our rivers and are extremely harmful to aquatic life, are now also found in blood samples from EU politicians (more in Wildlife and Countryside Link's blog). We've also been very concerned about the issue of chemicals in our rivers. For more information about this group of toxic compounds causing concern for both the environment and our health, read our State of Our Rivers 2024 report (https://lnkd.in/eRTjd5Qz) in which we highlight that every single river in England has failed to pass chemical health standards. We also take a deep dive into forever chemicals (https://lnkd.in/etH8vR5S) in which we share analysis by The Rivers Trust and Wildlife and Countryside Link that shone the light on just how widespread PFAS are in English rivers. Our research found that 77% of English river sites where PFAS were detected would not meet the tougher EU safety standards that have been proposed for surface water. Our rivers are in a chemical crisis, and the issue of chemicals is one that stretches far beyond the riverbanks. We need Government to introduce stronger protections for wildlife and people. ✊
From non-stick pans to waterproof coats, did you know that many everyday products contain chemicals that can linger in the environment indefinitely? PFAS "forever chemicals" have been found polluting habitats, wildlife & even our bodies. Blood tests on EU politicians by European Environmental Bureau found over half of the thirteen chemicals analysed were present. In some cases, exposure levels exceeded existing levels of concern. The excessive growth of freshwater cyanobacteria can result in harmful algal blooms (HABs) that pose risks to public health and impair drinking water sources. The recent column from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Office of Research and Development in the May 2024 Journal of Environmental Health explores tools offered by U.S. EPA to identify, model, and forecast HABs. The column highlights the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network, which was developed as an early warning indicator system to detect HABs. neha.org/may-2024

🚨 The intensification of dairy production, driven by pricing pressures, failure to enforce environmental regulations and inadequate government incentives for dairy farmers, has become one of the largest single polluters of our rivers. But there ARE solutions. Head to our Dairy Report 👉 https://lnkd.in/d5zm_TnR

We're pleased to see the new US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards on six PFAS 'forever chemicals' for drinking water, because PFAS are linked to increased breast cancer risk and many other health harms. The fact that EPA has for the first time ever regulated a mixture of chemicals is also an important step forward. Much more work and funding are needed to ensure people have water that is safe and free of all PFAS contamination, so we call on the EPA to move forward quickly and for PFAS-producing companies to pay for their pollution. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gdKqXZUh Meanwhile, if you live in California, please take our action to end use of forever chemicals: https://lnkd.in/gtMxMQyb And take action to remove PFAS from packaging https://lnkd.in/gB-gzaxx Also, visit our safer water filter guide: https://lnkd.in/g3vchkeZ
