Reducing Cultures to Caricatures I’ve been thinking about how cultures are often reduced to caricatures. It’s not just logos or themes—it’s about how stereotypes can flatten the richness of entire heritages. Lately, the spotlight has been on things like blackface and other outdated portrayals. The real issue isn’t just the act itself; it’s the lack of understanding behind it. Cultures are so much more than surface-level traits. They’re histories, stories, and people with layers upon layers of depth. As someone born and raised in Singapore, I can’t help but take this personally. While I’m not of African descent, I’d hate to be reduced to a stereotype of what people think a South Asian should be. I mean, if I was just a caricature, who would appreciate all my layers—like my love for padel tennis, tacos, and thinking up fictional last names? So, what do you think? How do we celebrate cultures while keeping it real? And on that note—what should we name our burro? Drop your ideas below; I promise I won’t turn it into a taco pun (okay, maybe I will). #RespectCultures #MoreThanStereotypes #KeepItSpicy #SingaporeReflections #ChimichangaSG
Ever Wondered about our logo? Well, it’s not a horse—it’s a burro! Our sleek pink silhouette (in fuchsia, to be exact) is a modern take on this iconic figure of Mexican culture. The burro, or donkey, symbolizes strength, resilience, and reliability—qualities that we wanted to reflect in Chimichanga as a brand. The burro holds a special place in Mexican culture, where it’s celebrated for its hardworking and headstrong nature. Interestingly, these traits resonate deeply in South Asia too. As a brand founded in Asia, the burro’s importance felt like a perfect fit for us. It represents the shared values of tenacity, humility, and reliability that connect cultures across the globe. When we created Chimichanga, we knew we didn’t want to be just another “Mexican-themed” restaurant. You’ve seen it before—moustached men, sombreros, and other outdated stereotypes that reduce a vibrant culture to clichés. That’s not who we are. Mexican culture is a rich, diverse melting pot, and Mexico City itself is a hub of modernity and creativity. Our fuchsia burro reflects this spirit while embracing the hard work and perseverance that are universal values. But here’s the fun part: we’ve never given our burro a name! After all these years, we think it’s time. Should it reflect their Mexican roots? Their personality? Or maybe something unique to Singapore? What would you name our bold, fuchsia mascot? Share your ideas below—we’d love to hear them! 🐾✨ #ChimichangaSG #MexicanCulture #Branding #SingaporeEats #FoodWithSoul #BoldBranding

According to data released from Qichacha, a Chinese corporate database, in the first 10 months of 2023, more than 106 million restaurants and bars have folded their business. In stark contrast, a wine bar called iBarrel, developed by a Shanghai-based internet technology company in 2015 has seen a meteoric rise in popularity, boasting an irresistible offer: three hours of free-flow wine at just RMB 99 (US$13.6). An industry insider who talked to us revealed that a single iBarrel location in Shanghai can generate up to RMB 20,000 (RMB 2796) in sales daily. Here's the story of iBarrel and how it bucked the downward trend. #news #china #wine #bar #iBarrel #shanghai #chengdu #wineoffer #hospitality #pandemic #report #analysis #business #market
