As our Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck highlighted, the decision in favour of carbon capture, transport and storage (CCS) is a landmark decision for the industry in Germany. This week's cabinet resolution finally clears the way. The photo below was taken in January 2023 at Heidelberg Materials’ first large-scale CCS plant in Brevik, Norway. We met to discuss: ► the importance of the technology to reach national and global climate targets, ► how Norway's successful CO₂ storage initiatives could serve as a model for Germany, and ► importantly, how society in Norway has developed to support CCS over the past 25 years. Seeing how this is now becoming a reality is indeed a decisive moment in Germany’s industry history: It shows how policymakers and industry can shape the future together with the right will and level of pragmatism. Now we need to scale things up - for example with our GeZero project in Geseke/North Rhine-Westphalia to make a step change in reducing Germany’s CO2 emissions. #Sustainability #CO2Storage #Innovation #ClimateAction

We are very excited to start discussing innovative approaches to citizen engagement in energy policy together. The last speaker to join us in this debate will be Morten Mejsen Westergaard. As President of the National association of Energy Communities Denmark and Head of Climate at Middelfart Kommune he has some inspiring viewpoints on how authorities can collaborate with energy communities to achieve a fair and just energy transition. Morten believes that this transition will require investments and risk taking by both private and public actors.
