Industry-Academia Collaboration: Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur's Positive Step with #Samanvay 2024 #IIT Kanpur hosted Samanvay 2024, an #event designed to close the gap between #industry and #academia. I was #fortunate to be an active participant in this transformative event. Among the various stimulating #discussions, one topic that particularly stood out was: "How to Increase Industry-Academia #Collaboration?" Key points Academic researchers often find little interest in problem statements posed by industries. Industry demands tend to focus on immediate applicability, while academic research thrives on curiosity-driven inquiries. #Trust Deficit Industry stakeholders sometimes exhibit skepticism about the ability of academic research to deliver results within desired timelines or solve real-world challenges effectively. #Cultural Differences In industry, failure is often frowned upon due to cost implications, whereas in academia, failure is seen as a learning step and part of the research process. Industry #focuses on “what works,” while academia emphasizes understanding the underlying “why.” My Perspective: Why is I & A Collaboration in India Comparatively Low? India lags behind developed nations like the #US and #Europe in engaging strong industry-academia partnerships. In my view, the primary reason lies in reluctancy in industrial research in academia and the short-term focus of Indian industries, especially in sectors like #medical #devices. India currently imports over 80% of its medical devices, highlighting the immense pressure on domestic industries to first replicate existing technologies rather than investing in #futuristic research. Consequently, many Indian companies focus on reverse engineering or adapting technologies with expired patents, leaving little room for #innovative, #long-term projects that could attract academia. The Way Forward To bridge this gap, Indian industries need to adopt a #dual-vision approach—balancing short-term profitability with long-term vision and innovation: Invest in #Visionary Projects: Indian companies should allocate a portion of their profits to futuristic, long-term projects. This strategic investment would allow them to explore groundbreaking ideas without jeopardizing immediate financial stability. Engage Academia as #Strategic Partners: For long-term projects, industries can collaborate with academic researchers to conduct foundational studies under the guidance of industry experts. This approach ensures that research is aligned with industrial goals while retaining the intellectual depth of academia. Promote Collaborative R&D #Ecosystems: Many of the IITs are establishing such centres. Example: Technopark IITK.IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP) #Recognize and #Reward Failure: Industries should take a leaf from academia’s playbook by celebrating learning from failures. Such a mindset would encourage innovation and experimentation, critical for long-term success.

A US$300 Billion global Ed-Tech industry is witnessing good VC interest and several mergers and acquisitions, especially in North America and APAC. As education gets commoditized and institutes start playing the volume game (Institutes with high enrollment and offering multiple disciplines enjoy an advantage with NIRF and NEP), Ed-Tech takes center stage. It was so disturbing to hear statements like, 'Our university has so many thousand students, and Ed Tech, therefore, is a must.' It sounds as if you are in a fish market. The Higher Education narrative is slowly losing its core purpose by recklessly increasing the scale with a cookie-cutter approach to education. We blame the students, but are the teachers ready for the new world order? I argued that a successful Ed-Tech implementation has more to do with the generation of learners, the learning lifecycle, accessibility, serious or fun-based experience, personalization, and eliminating the digital divide. The ed-Tech landscape must expand beyond MOOC, Moodle, Smart Boards, and MS Teams, and soft nontech issues must first be addressed! In short, Ed-Tech must be humane first and tech later. India’s #innovation journey has been strictly restricted to certain regions that have been privileged with economic growth and have a legacy of industrialization. The spirit of cooperative and competitive federalism is allowing us to share of best practices between States/UTs, to widen and replicate the innovation landscape across the country, especially in the parts that have the potential to become hubs of innovation. But most importantly, this will help other important stakeholders to assess these areas of the innovation landscape, and the value they holds for businesses so they can partake in this innovation journey for Viksit Bharat 2047 . Advancing Andhra Pradesh's Industrial Capabilities: The Need for a #C4i4 Yesterday, our #Chairman, Sreedhar Kosaraju, had the privilege of meeting the Hon'ble Minister for Industries, Shri T.G. Bharat, in an industry interactive session hosted by Chaman Baid. Sreedhar Kosaraju proposed to the Hon'ble Minister the establishment of a Common Engineering Facility Center (#CEFC) or C4i4 in #AndhraPradesh. This center would play a pivotal role in advancing our state's industrial capabilities by providing a dedicated space for #engineering #innovation, #development, and training. Under the #SAMARTH Udyog Bharat 4.0 initiative, an Industry 4.0 project by the Ministry of Heavy Industry & Public Enterprises, Government of India, experiential and demonstration centers for Industry 4.0 have been proposed to spread awareness about I4.0. Five such centers have been sanctioned under #SAMARTHUdyog: Center for Industry 4.0 (C4i4) Lab, Pune IITD-AIA Foundation for Smart Manufacturing, New Delhi IISc Factory R&D Platform, Bengaluru Smart Manufacturing Demo & Development Cell at CMTI Augmentation of Centre for Industry 4.0 & Data Engineering Skill Development Centres at 10 different locations in India Rationale for CEFC in Andhra Pradesh: Enhanced Industrial Capabilities: A CEFC would equip our local industries with cutting-edge technology and facilities, promoting advanced manufacturing and engineering practices. #Skilling and #Training: The center would offer specialized training programs for the local workforce, enhancing their skills and employability in high-tech industries. #Innovation and R&D: By providing resources for #research and development, the CEFC would foster #innovation, helping local businesses develop new products and improve existing processes. #Economic Growth: The establishment of a CEFC would attract investments, boost local businesses, and contribute to the economic growth of the region. Support for MSMEs: The center would provide Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with access to advanced tools and technologies, helping them compete on a larger scale. Given the significant benefits, the establishment of a CEFC in Andhra Pradesh can become a reality, significantly benefiting our state's industrial landscape.
