3 reasons size has remained an enigma for centuries 1️⃣ Lack of standardisation: There’s no such thing as a standard body so there isn’t a standard size. This causes variations in size that depend on the brand, its location, the item of clothing and the fabric. Increasing the complexity of sizing for consumers. 2️⃣ Psychological factors: Consumers often struggle with their clothing sizes because of how they view their bodies due to influence by social comparison, emotional factors and also cultural influences. As a result of this “vanity sizing” emerged as a way to make consumers feel they are a skinnier size, adding to the inaccuracy and complexity of sizing by altering sizing according to emotion. 3️⃣ Varying body shapes: It is a challenge for the fashion industry to cater to all the varying body shapes. Situations where consumers have the same body size but different fit requirements due to height for example have added to the challenge. While this cartoon is intended to be funny, it also is a sad commentary on how modern society is embracing entitlement. What is missing from this is the understanding that most of these returned clothing items get sent to landfill by the retailers. And if not landfill, they get sent to other countries for disposal. It's a waste of materials and energy. Multiple colors??? C'mon, give me a break. Before you order, make up your mind on which color(s) you actually want. Multiple sizes??? Know what size you are before you order. Also fashion designers could help A LOT by adopting size attributes that actually make sense. In men's clothing, we have things like chest measurement, neck, sleeve length, waist and inseam (for trousers). Shoes have standard sizes in length and width. They may vary from country to country, but the underlying measurements are still the same. Women's clothing could - and probably should - adopt something like this. What's a size 6? Is a size 8 Dior the same as a size 8 Donna Karan? It may be I have a bias because I'm male, but I see women's fashion as far more wasteful than men's.
