Here are some of the charming puffins that inhabit the island of Craigleith in the Firth of Forth that are the focal point of my ongoing research efforts. I'm spearheading a project with the #ScottishSeabirdCentre, generously funded by #NatureScot's Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (SMEEF) - our main objective is to enhance the habitat on Craigleith through the implementation of effective strategies aimed at controlling the spread of nettles. By doing so, we aim to create a more hospitable environment for these unique seabirds, ensuring their long-term sustainability and preservation. Through meticulous observation and data collection, we will be able to pinpoint the areas most affected by nettles and tailor our intervention strategies accordingly. This collaborative effort not only benefits the puffin population but also contributes to the overall biodiversity and ecological balance of the island. The success of this project will serve as a testament to the positive impact that targeted conservation efforts can have on coastal ecosystems.

The Australian Government has awarded $28.5 million across 18 projects to deliver on-ground measures to restore and rehabilitate coastal habitats on the Great Barrier Reef. According to Biodiversity Councillor Professor Catherine Lovelock from the The University of Queensland this is a positive course correction compared to previous government spending. “These are the no-brainer, least sexy, but sensible approaches to enhancing resilience of the Great Barrier Reef. Projects have been selected that will have widespread benefits for coastal ecosystems; they are on-ground, many are NRM-led and some are Indigenous led.” Efforts will focus on revegetating coastal ecosystems, managing weed infestations and other introduced species, stabilising shorelines and mitigating streambank erosion across degraded seagrass, mangrove, saltmarsh and wetland habitats.

Restoring islands from the threats of invasive mammals can protect and restore carbon stocks of native woody vegetation that exist nowhere else in the world. A new study just published in Environmental Research Letters authored with the support of my colleagues at FLINTpro, terraPulse, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, University of Maryland, and ASU Center for Biodiversity Outcomes leverages AI, modeling, and carbon accounting to evaluate changes in forests over the last 40 years on nearly 1,000 islands, for the first time ever, using #NASA Earth Observations. We use these to report on the positive effects of island restoration on climate and develop a scalable framework to inform policy-making. Thanks to Predator Free 2050 Limited, Salesforce Nature Accelerator, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Biological Diversity and Ecological Conservation, Clare.nz, and many others for making this possible. #remotesensing #islandrestoration #climatesolutions
Restored islands capture millions of metric tons of carbon per year and could capture millions more! Island Conservation's David Will co-authored a paper, published today, that shows the connection between #holisticrestoration, #carboncapture, and #climateresilience and provides a scalable framework to measure the positive effects of island restoration on climate in a simple, affordable, and consistent way, in terms that are relevant to policy-making. THE EU NATURE RESTORATION LAW - a historic win for nature, people, and the economy!🌍🌿💼 First proposed by the European Commission back in June 2022, two years later the EU member states will have to prioritize the restoration of Natura 2000 protected areas, which cover Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.💚 MAIN GOALS: ➖Increase biodiversity.🌺🦉🦢 ➖Natural Disaster Prevention: Harness nature's power to clean our water and air, pollinate crops, and improve food security while preventing and reducing the impact of natural disasters like floods.🌧️🍃🌾 ➖Tree Planting: Plant at least three billion new trees by 2030.🌳🌲 ➖Maintaining Urban Green Spaces: No net loss of urban green spaces and tree canopy cover.🏙️🌳 WHAT IT MEANS? ➖Targets and obligations for EU member states to rehabilitate their natural habitats (80% of which are currently in poor condition).🌱🛠️ ➖Special focus on habitats with the most potential to capture and store carbon - wetlands, rivers, forests, grasslands, urban and marine ecosystems (and the species inhabiting them).🌊🌳 ➖Includes specific measures to restore Europe’s declining pollinator populations.🐝🦋🌸 Does One Tree Planted also plan to participate in planting these billions of trees?🌍🌳 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ejqAXxUh #nature #sustainability #berloblub #bedifferent #makeadifference #naturerestorationlaw #eulaw #onetreeplanted

“Let us break down the silos of conservation, biodiversity restoration, impact assessment, economic development, etc., by interacting together whatever our roles(conservation managers, urban planners, impact assessors, food aid workers, farmers, fisherfolk, and so on). Let us focus on nature-based solutions and educate each other. To do so requires action anchored in thinking big about the whole planet and its interdependent resources, but at the same time delivering action locally, creating local ownership and using local knowledge to promote equity in access to resources and recognition of our place in nature." #Nature #Climatechange

In the UK specifically, Natural England's 2024-2025 Action Plan sets ambitious targets to improve biodiversity, protect species, and restore habitats. Key initiatives include enhancing the condition of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), as well as reintroducing species like the hen harrier and beaver. The plan also emphasizes expanding accessible green spaces and ensuring nature recovery contributes to local socio-economic benefits. This resonates with the dissertation I'm undertaking entitled "Beaver Reintroduction and Their Effect on Water Quality Parameters". #WildlifeConservation #Biodiversity #SustainableFuture https://lnkd.in/eA3BMjx5

A "seascape" refers to a geographically distinct, large-scale area of the ocean and coastline that encompasses multiple ecosystems and habitat types. The concept of a seascape is important for integrated management and conservation efforts, as it allows for the holistic consideration of ecological connections, human activities, and governance systems across different marine and coastal environments. The 3 previously identified seascapes within the Coral Triangle are the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape, Bismarck-Solomon Seas, Sunda-Banda Seascape. These seascapes were chosen for their important biodiversity conservation features and blue carbon potential, allowing for interventions which could conserve, restore and promote resilient coastal ecosystems that deliver multiple socio-economic benefits. At the Coral Triangle Conservation Fund (CTCF), one of the outcome targets under our Protect strategy pillar is to ensure that Marine Protected and Conserved Areas (MPCAs) cover at least 20% of such priority seascapes for regional connectivity, biodiversity, and resilience. #wildlife #conservation #forcoral #fornature #generationrestoration #sustainabledevelopment Find out more about CTCF’s conservation efforts: www.coraltrianglefund.org
