🌟 We are very happy to share that the 🇪🇺 #NatureRestorationLaw has been adopted by the #EU Council of Ministers on Monday! 👏🏼 It is the first of its kind continent-wide regulation on nature restoration. We feel that our work at #SpongeScapes is more needed than ever as we aim to develop nature-based solutions like sponge measures to mitigate floods, droughts, and environmental degradation. This groundbreaking regulation sets ambitious, legally binding targets to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need by 2050. More concretely, this law will support Member States to: -Reconnect 25,000 km of rivers by removing man-made barriers 🌊 -Restore drained peatlands and plant 3 billion trees by 2030 🌳 -Enhance agricultural ecosystems, increasing biodiversity and soil health 🐦🦋 It aims to secure the essential services nature provides for free, like cleaning our water and air, maintaining healthy soils, pollinating crops, and protecting us from floods. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eXRqEmS5

Great news! The Nature Restoration Law has been approved. The regulation will set legally binding targets to restore 20% of the EU’s degraded land and sea ecosystems by 2030 and all ecosystems by 2050. To achieve these objectives, EU countries must restore at least 30% of habitats covered by the law from poor to good condition by 2030 (such as forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers, and lakes) and 90% by 2050. Member states must also ensure that these areas do not deteriorate once restored. Unfortunately, some of the measures were watered down, but the law will be enacted 20 days after publication in the EU Official Journal. Big and positive news for nature today! 🐘 🍃 🌄 🌊 🐠 This morning the Council of the EU formally approved the final text of the EU Nature Restoration Law. After months of delay and uncertainty, the approval paves the way for the legislation to enter into force and apply from this summer. 🎉 The new legislation will require each Member State to achieve the following targets (which will then be translated into national plans): 🌍 Restore 20% of degraded land and sea ecosystems by 2030 🌻 Restore all ecosystems by 2050 🌲 Restore 30% of forests, grasslands, wetlands, rivers and lakes from poor to good conditions by 2030, increasing to 90% by 2050. The new legislation will provide the legal framework for not just the protection, but restoration of nature and biodiversity. The targets contained in the law will play a key role in informing corporate level biodiversity targets. #sustainability #EUGreenDeal #Biodiversity https://lnkd.in/eXGyvzXQ

[#NEWS] I Care maintains its support to the EU Nature Restoration Law ! It will: 💧safeguard crucial natural resources 🔥protect our economy & lives 💸 cost us less than inaction on nature loss & #climatechange 🌍 More than 50% of the global economy or global GDP is dependent on nature and we cannot afford the cost of inaction on climate change and biodiversity loss. That’s why we joined a group of businesses calling for the EU Nature Restoration Law, the first European-wide law aiming to tackle the loss of our key ecosystems. Together with more European companies, we urge the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union to ensure the final adoption of the law. “We, businesses, need the natural resources and ecosystem services that are now under threat from biodiversity loss and climate change. Failure to act will lead to costly disruptions across supply chains, lower productivity and higher operational costs. Nature restoration can ensure long-term sustainability for businesses and conserve the resources on which many of our economic activities depend,” 👉 Read the full letter here: https://lnkd.in/dnzqdC7W Guillaume Neveux Justine MARIETTE Constance von Briskorn Eliette Verdier Sarah Loufrani Coralie Corberand Constance Gires Servane Demarquet Gabrielle de Préville #RestoreNature #climatechange #biodiversityloss

The #EUNatureRestoration Law entered into force two days ago. The regulation sets out ambitious EU-wide and member state-level nature restoration targets, obligations to re-establish habitats, and requirements to improve the state of ecosystems. The implementation of the regulation will begin in the EU member states. In the preparation of national restoration plans, which will guide the member states' restoration efforts, it will be necessary to reconcile the environmental, economic, and social impacts of restoration. Brussels is not staying silent on the matter either. The Commission is expected to propose a uniform format for the national restoration plan by 1 of December 2024. I anticipate a lively exchange of views on the subject both at the national and EU levels. What do you expect from the implementation of the regulation? https://lnkd.in/dBmBx5iM
