🚮♻️ 🍽️ As the world observes the fifth 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 (IDFLW), the urgency to address food waste has never been more pressing. Food loss and waste is a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for an estimated 8–10% of global emissions. Beyond the environmental toll, the social implications are equally concerning. The wasted food could have nourished millions, alleviating the hunger experienced by a significant portion of the global population. These dual consequences underscore the pressing need for change. #ShapingaWorldofTrust #ZeroWaste #GreenhouseGasEmissions

Do you know that over half of the SDGs is directly tied to food wastage? Sustainability and You One significant way by which you, as an individual can greatly contribute to sustainability is avoiding food wastage. Food wastage has profound implications for sustainability. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately one-third of all food produced globally is wasted. This wasted food represents a significant loss of resources, including water, land, energy, and labor. For example, it takes about 70 liters of water to produce a single apple and about 1,800 gallons to produce a pound of beef Furthermore, food waste contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. The FAO estimates that if food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the United States and China. Reducing food waste is therefore an essential strategy for mitigating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. photo: linkedin #Sustainability #PersonalResponsibility #IndividualAction #ConsciousLiving #EnvironmentalAwareness #CollectiveImpact #SustainablePractices #ClimateAction #EcoFriendly #SustainableFuture #SustainableFoodSystems #WaterConservation #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture

🌍 Join us today, as we observe the fifth International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) under the theme “Climate Finance for Food Loss and Waste Reduction.” This day highlights the urgent need for collaboration among public and private sectors and consumers to tackle food loss and waste. Addressing this issue is crucial for combating climate change, ensuring food security, and advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Food waste squanders valuable resources—water, land, and energy—and accounts for 8-10% of global agrifood system emissions, with methane being 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide. By reducing food loss and waste, we can protect our environment and enhance food access worldwide. It's time to take action! IDAFLW 2024 calls for increased climate finance to promote sustainable practices and achieve the global target of halving food waste by 2030, as outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 12.3) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Together, let’s work towards a sustainable future for our nation, the global community, and the planet! #StopFoodWaste #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction #FoodSecurity #IDAFLW2024 #ActNow #Jamaica #industryminja Food Storage and Prevention of Infestation Division

As we observe #TheInternationalDayofZeroWaste on March 30th, let's reflect on the global challenge of food loss and waste. According to UNEP's latest Food Waste Index Report (2024), the world wasted 1.05 billion tonnes of food in 2022. Despite having an abundance of food, a third of the food ever produced after harvest and at the consumer level is lost or wasted - while millions still suffer from food insecurity, resources are squandered and climate change is exacerbated. The road forward to address this growing challenge is one of collaboration. Through joining hands to rethink how we produce and how we consume, intervene through redistributing surplus food, supporting innovative technologies, or advancing policy related to food across its value chain, our collective efforts can transform the way we approach waste. Let's go beyond and use this day as a reminder of our shared responsibility to end #FoodWaste. #ZeroWaste #Sustainability #ClimateAction

Here’s how this problem becomes not only economical, or ecological, but social. 1/3 of the world's population, more than 2 billion people, face food insecurity. However, food waste is also a major issue, with enough food being thrown away to give each hungry person more than one meal a day. This waste also contributes to harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Households are the largest source of food waste, but restaurants and other food services waste even more. Solving food waste won't solve hunger, but it can provide more food for those in need. #foodinsecurity #pollution #climaterisk #climatechange #economy #economics #esg #riskmanagement #managementofchange

A shocking 50% of this colossal #waste comes straight from our homes, eclipsing the waste from farms and the #food service industry. This infographic maps out the journey of food waste across the U.S.. Most of this waste lands in landfills, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas emissions - equivalent to the annual emissions of 42 coal power plants! Beyond environmental degradation, food waste exacerbates global hunger and squanders vital resources like water and energy. The visualization calls attention to the critical stages of food supply where waste is rampant. Addressing these can significantly move the needle towards sustainability in the U.S. food system and beyond. 💡 Stay ahead in the game of sustainability and energy with our free weekly newsletter. As global demand for water, food, and energy continues to rise, we face unprecedented challenges in managing these interconnected resources. Did you know: - Agriculture is the largest consumer of the world's freshwater resources - More than one-quarter of the energy used globally is expended on food production and supply - Water is used to produce most forms of energy (Source: United Nations Water) The pressure on this nexus threatens our progress towards sustainable development goals, particularly those related to addressing hunger and progressing on climate action. And when we waste food, we waste all the resources that went into its production and distribution. By focusing on reducing food waste, we can make a significant impact: - Conserve water and energy used in food production - Make more efficient use of agricultural resources - Free up water for other critical needs - Reduce energy consumption in food production and distribution As we face increasing pressure from population growth and rapid urbanisation, tackling food waste offers a practical approach to addressing these challenges with solutions. The road ahead is one of collective action. What steps are you taking to reduce food waste in your daily life or business operations? #Goumbook #changingmindsets #EatItorSaveIt #Sustainability #ClimateAction #CircularEconomy #FoodWaste
