The amount of carbon that a peat bog can sequester is astounding, globally there is twice as much carbon locked away in peatlands as all the world's forests.
The Flow Country in northern Scotland, a vast and unique blanket bog ecosystem covering nearly 2,000 sq km, has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status after a 40-year campaign. This rare designation recognises the area's outstanding ecological and scientific significance, including its diverse wildlife and crucial role in carbon sequestration. The peatlands, formed over 10,000 years, contain an estimated 400 million tonnes of carbon—twice that of all British woodlands combined. This recognition is expected to boost conservation efforts and community engagement in protecting this vital landscape for future generations. https://lnkd.in/eKjfcDtb

Happy Earth Day fine people 🌍 Let's take a moment today to celebrate what we are already blessed with. The Parc naturel marin du Bassin d’Arcachon is an internationally renowned European Seascape that is characterised by a veritable mosaic of coastal ecosystems (including the largest intertidal seagrass ecosystem in Europe). It is a truly unique ecosystem that has been shaped both by the ocean and by its freshwater rivers. From the Leyre delta, to the fringing salt-marsh and the extensive mudflats, this remarkable seascape provides essential ecological functions that are critically important both locally and on a global scale. From the vantage point (photo) atop the Grande Dune du Pilat (the tallest sand dune in Europe) the windswept dunes of the Cap Ferret peninsula frame numerous sandy islets, including the iconic Banc d’Arguin at the entrance to the Bassin d’Arcachon. This opening connects the lagoon to the ocean. A true “ecological corridor”, and a place of passage that allows oceanic species such as phytoplankton and juvenile fish to enter the bassin, and other species - such as eels - to continue their life cycle at sea. Located on one of the world’s most important migration routes, this celebrated seascape provides shorebirds with a wide range of nesting, resting and feeding habitats. For this Earth Day, let’s remind ourselves - more than ever - that we need to protect incredible seascapes such as this, and shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth. Join #GenerationRestoration today, the global movement to restore our world! https://lnkd.in/ez_uYDJG

Approximately 10km off the coast of Peniche, a popular seaside town in central Portugal, lies the Berlengas islands, one of the world’s first nature reserves and since 2011 a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The islands exemplify the successful integration of natural ecosystems and cultural preservation. The reserve is vital for protecting local biodiversity, hosting numerous unique bird species like the Berlenga Guillemot, and the endemic plant Armeria berlengensis, both now critically endangered. Key conservation efforts include creating exclusion areas to protect A. berlengensis from predatory birds, and removing invasive species like Carpobrotus edulis, a coastal invader plant, rats, and rabbits. These actions have significantly aided the recovery of native species and the overall health of the ecosystem. Amidst this natural beauty stands the Fort of São João Baptista, dating back to the 17th century. The fort was built using the remnants of a former monastery, the Monastery of the Misericórdia da Berlenga, which had previously been abandoned. Construction began under the rule of John IV of Portugal when the need for improved coastal defense was recognized, leading to the decision to demolish the monastery ruins to erect the fort. Its preservation underscores the importance of maintaining historical sites alongside natural habitats, reflecting a holistic approach to heritage conservation. #BerlengasIslands #ConservationEfforts #HistoricalPreservation #NatureReserve #BiodiversityProtection #CulturalHeritage #Peniche #VisitPortugal https://lnkd.in/dKVvCu49
