We have reduced our annual medical waste by 13.9%, as part of our efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle waste across our operations. Key waste reduction initiatives across CVS include: 🚮 Introducing reusable sharps bins to save 21,000 single-use bins from incineration annually 🥼 An ongoing research project investigating reuseable operating theatre textiles ♻️ Increasing plastic recycling including HDPE, LDPE, PP and PET. 🧍 The appointment of 312 Environment Champions: These colleagues drive waste reduction, waste separation and increased recycling in each practice. 💡 Creating and delivering waste reduction training for colleagues 🌲 Launching greener products in our new ‘sustainable shop’ at Vet Direct 🌍 Introducing a new Supplier Code of Conduct Over the next year, we aim to reduce waste sent to landfill by 10% and increase non-medical waste recycled to 38%. 🔬 Driving Real Solutions to Plastic Waste: PHA in Focus 🧪 Our company is committed to finding actionable solutions in the fight against plastic waste, with PHAs playing a central role in this mission. A recent paper by Koller and Mukherjee underscores why PHAs are a game-changer and should be an integral part of that fight. With only 9% of petrochemical plastics currently being recycled, 12% incinerated, and 79% dumped in the environment, it is easy to see why focusing on recycling alone is not going to solve the plastic pollution problem. Barring a rapid and fundamental shift in human behavior and recycling technologies, we need alternatives to traditional plastics that can decompose in soil, landfills, salt water, and freshwater. PHAs are among the very few materials that can do that. We estimate that an excess of 8 million tons of plastic waste was generated, of which only 10% was recycled, 22% inadequately managed, and the rest disposed in pits, or worse, incinerated.
