Did you know how Agenskalns Bay was formed? Engineer Gustavs Emanuels von Weismanis (1764–1782) led the construction of the Daugava dam, connecting six islands into one chain: Bieķensala, Mūkusala, Lielā Klīversala, Burkānu sala, Mazā Klīversala, and Ķīpsala. In the spring of 1785 or 1786, the Daugava river broke through the dam between Lielā Klīversala and Burkānu sala, creating what we now know as Āgenskalns Bay.

Hosts: Dr. Prannoy Suraneni, University of Miami, United States and Prof. Karen Scrivener, EPFL, Switzerland Title: Wood is not the climate-friendly building material often claimed Many argue that the world should shift to “mass timber” to reduce emissions from new building construction. In the Carbon Costs of Global Wood Harvests (Nature 2023) and an associated report, Searchinger and others found that claims for the climate advantages of wood were based on different variations of the idea that harvesting wood is carbon neutral. This means that most of the carbon in wood lost from a forest and not stored in buildings due to harvesting and using wood is not counted as emissions. The same approach underlies claims for the climate benefits of using wood for bioenergy. This talk will discuss how the climate effects of harvesting wood should be counted and the implications of using wood for construction and other purposes. In Piran Bay an artificial reef was installed ithis summer to provide habitat for fish and other marine life. As a keen snorkeller this area of the Adriatic Sea always seems a little devoid of life so I’m super happy to see the installation of the Sea Oasis Piran. As a farmer we are trying to help the marine environment too. We always keep the ground cover with vegetation, capture storm water run off both of which stop sediment flowing to the sea. We also use minimal fertilizer and pesticides to reduce pollution of the Adriatic Sea. #slovenia #seaoasis #piran #portoroz #gramonafarm #regenerative #farming #ecosystemengineers #yousea #stormwater
