🔬🌊 Explore Chemosensory Perception in Copepods with Our New PhD Project!🎓 Title: Chemosensory Perception in Copepods: Behavioral, Physiological, and Molecular Responses to Biotic Stimuli📚 Curriculum: EMI📧 Contact: Dr. Ylenia Carotenuto (ylenia.carotenuto@szn.it)📞 Tel: 0815833280🐟 Overview: Mesozooplankton copepods are crucial links in marine food webs, connecting phytoplankton and larger consumers like fish and mammals. This PhD project aims to characterize how copepods perceive algal prey and mates through chemosensory mechanisms, using a combined behavioral, physiological, and molecular approach.🔬 Focus: We will analyze the expression of chemosensory genes in copepods from the Gulf of Naples when exposed to various biotic cues, such as toxic algae and mates. This innovative study integrates methodologies from multiple research fields to reveal the molecular basis of chemoperception and its impact on copepod behavior and physiology.🌍 Impact: The results could lead to new biomarkers for chemical ecology studies and contribute to the management of healthy marine ecosystems.📆 Apply now and join us in this groundbreaking research!📆 The closing date for applications is June 21st, 2024 h. 12.00More info: https://lnkd.in/dqj7s7Ng

🌊 Excited to announce our latest publication: "Effects of temperature and size class on the gut digesta microbiota of the sea urchin Tripneustes ventricosus". 🧬🐚 This work highlights the intricate relationship between marine invertebrates and their microbiota, especially under changing environmental conditions. 🌎✨ Thanks to Dr. Filipa Godoy-Vitorino and Dr. Ruber Rodríguez-Barreras for this opportunity. Key findings: 1️⃣ Seasonal shifts significantly impact gut microbiota, with Bacteroidota dominating in warmer months and Firmicutes thriving in cooler conditions. ❄️☀️ 2️⃣ Size matters! While microbiota composition was relatively stable, smaller urchins exhibited slightly higher bacterial diversity. 📈👨💻 This project stems from a "side adventure" during my PhD, showcasing my passion for environmental microbiology and host-microbiota studies! 🦠 🔗 Dive into the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ep2VvTkt #EnvironmentalMicrobiology #MarineBiology #GutMicrobiota #ScienceSideProjects #Biodiversity

FUNDED CORAL PHD: Understanding genetic connectivity and evolution across the Coral Triangle (National University of Singapore) Using molecular techniques such as RADseq, population genomics seeks to use the unparalleled resolution that several thousand Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) can provide. This high-resolution approach allows us to answer questions related to marine biodiversity, especially what creates it and what maintains it, we can then apply this knowledge to the conservation of marine ecosystems. Using samples from multiple species that have already been collected along an approximate 6000km east to west transect from Sumatra to Papua New Guinea, this project seeks to explain why the Coral Triangle is so biologically diverse, what facilitates and what restricts gene flow in the region, and finally, how can we use this information to advance conservation planning in the marine ecosystems of Southeast Asia. The candidate will learn DNA sequence library preparation skills along with the associated techniques, analysis of genomic data sets to understand marine biodiversity and genetic connectivity, and then apply this to the conservation of coral reefs and their associated biodiversity. The candidate will have the opportunity to integrate molecular data with oceanographic data related to ocean currents and sea surface temperatures to produce models that can predict larval dispersal patterns. 🌿🔬🧬𝐀𝐈 𝐱 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭'𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 ✅April 16 is celebrated every year as World Biologists' Day. This special day is organized to emphasize the importance of biologists and celebrate the contributions of this branch of science. Biology is a branch of science that studies the evolution of life from its birth to the present day, the diversity of living things, ecosystems and genetic structures. Biologists contribute to the well-being of society by working in health, environment, agriculture, genetics and many other fields. ✅"Knowing that tomorrow needs biologists and saying 'Tomorrow cannot be without biologists', I congratulate all our colleagues on April 16, World Biologists Day." 🧬Biologists are heroes dedicated to unlocking the secrets of nature. Their work shapes our future in a healthier and more sustainable way. #biology #biologist #molecularbiologist #biotechnologist #plantbiology #genetics #cell

My colleagues and I had one "problem" before we set off our research project; we could only work on an entomology project. Personally, I had another "problem "; I wanted to work on something that is exploratory, quantitative and curiosity driven. In other words, I wanted to work on a project I could enjoy, the one that could get my reflexes on each time I think about it. I wanted to hands-on set off my research journey by working on something that would form a blue print of all the research projects I will do in future. I made sure I acquired skills I can transfer to any and my field of interest, that is, cell and molecular biology. Yes, first time was nerve-wracking but it was all "days-in-Hawaii" when we finally got the results. #research #settingfoundation #undergraduate

Addressing the challenges of metagenomics with nanopore sequencing The advance of DNA sequencing technologies to allow genomic analysis of samples containing many species has made it possible to obtain complete or nearly complete genome sequences from uncultured microorganisms — providing an important means to study their biology, ecology, and evolution. However, a number of challenges remain, particularly for time-critical or remote sampling applications such as outbreak investigation and pathogen surveillance. In this review, we will explore how nanopore sequencing is addressing the challenges of metagenomics, with real-world examples of how researchers are applying the benefits of nanopore technology in this field to reveal unprecedented insight into microbial communities. https://lnkd.in/gffqQNu4

A novel in vitro approach to identify microbial and cellular signatures of short bowel syndrome Ludovica Marinelli, Ghent University, Belgium, presented research on short bowel syndrome (SBS), which is marked by reduced bowel length and altered microbial ecology. This study introduces an in vitro method to identify microbial, metabolic, and cellular markers linked to SBS. Using a Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecology (SHIME), the researchers simulated SBS and analyzed microbial composition through 16S rRNA sequencing. Co-culture models assessed the impact of SBS microbiota on barrier function and cytokine secretion. The findings showed significant alterations in microbial composition and epithelial functions in the SBS model, enhancing our understanding of microbial-host interactions in SBS. #InternationalSocietyofMicrobiota #TargetingMicrobiota2024 #microbiomeresearch #microbiome #microbiota #guthealth
