A new ECPAT survey highlights a worrying gap: While many EU parents trust their instincts and experiences to keep their children safe online, children often avoid turning to adults for support or guidance online. This gap leaves young users vulnerable to risks of abuse and exploitation. ECPAT calls on online platforms and governments to step up with ad hoc laws and safer platform designs. 👉️Join us: https://bit.ly/40Qlhm0 #EndChildSexualAbuseDay #ChildSafety #Online #Parents

🚨This week, the U.S. Senate passed the most significant online child safety bill in decades! Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) received bipartisan support in the Senate, but your help is still needed! 🚨 KOSA was drafted after a series of emotional hearings focused on the harms of social media on young people. This legislation intends to keep children safer in these key ways: ✅Require social media companies to better protect users under age 17. ✅Provide guardians with more control over minors' use of a platform, and prevent certain features such as autoplay. ✅Establish dedicated pages on which users can report harmful content. The bill will still face many hurdles before being passed as law. Show your support by using the link below to urge your representative to cosponsor KOSA! 🔗https://lnkd.in/ek3a3Dap #StopOppression #SheIsNotForSale

In this bone-chilling awareness campaign by Canadian Centre for Child Protection Inc., six courageous mothers share their personal stories. Each tells their kid’s experiences of online child exploitation from the same places they assumed their child would be safe, like a music room at school or their bedrooms. https://lnkd.in/gGTRxbk3 Education is one of the main tools we have to prevent this crime. This new SPECTRUM-led study is the first in Canada to use whole-population data to isolate impacts of custodial decisions on First Nations children involved with Child Protection Services. Results suggest there are worse health and legal outcomes for First Nations children who were placed in care compared with those who remained supervised in their home with an open CPS file. While the fear of potential consequences for not apprehending a child who is judged “at risk" may drive some decision-making in Child Protection Services, results from this study demonstrate the real harms that can and do result from children being taken into care. This new knowledge should inform decision-making at both the service and policy levels, including support for Indigenous communities across Canada which are beginning to enact their own child and family laws.
