The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has developed a resource to support early childhood self-regulation and cognitive development. It recommends that educators help children manage their thoughts, actions, and emotions by creating challenges, teaching self-monitoring, fostering collaborative learning, and promoting physical activity. The Evidence Store details specific strategies for early years education, such as summarising children's progress towards a common goal during group play to enhance collaboration skills, and encouraging "Imagine if..." scenarios to extend and challenge their thinking. https://lnkd.in/eWgDm49Z

Evidence shows that high-quality early childhood education can significantly improve an individual’s life chances, especially among disadvantaged or marginalised groups. EDT’s work begins making an impact when a child takes their first steps into the world of education, to be welcomed by skilled and confident practitioners. We have been delivering the Early Years Professional Development Programme (EYPDP) in England on behalf of the Department for Education since 2019. The EYPDP has had a truly nationwide impact, with at least one pre-school setting in all of England’s 153 local authorities taking part, and over 140,000 children reached this year. One participant expressed the positive impact the programme had on the early mathematics development of the children in their setting, ultimately improving educational outcomes for these children as they grow. Children need a diverse range of skills to thrive. But sometimes different funders have a different focus which makes it hard for partners to work in an holistic way. So we joined forces with leading education funders to collaborate around a shared vision. Our aim? To make it easier for our partners to support children to develop a full spectrum of skills - from literacy and numeracy to creativity and social-emotional learning. These efforts, led by The Brookings Institution and International Education Funders Group (IEFG), led to this joint commitment statement, which creates opportunities for co-funding, joint research, and collective impact. Exciting developments are on the horizon as we work together for a brighter future in education.

One of the most critical developmental periods for a child occurs in the first five years of their life. Early childhood education (ECE) is, therefore, a vital opportunity to provide children with the necessary cognitive, motor, and social-emotional skills to lay the groundwork for lifelong learning and success. Last year, we were proud to lead a scoping study on ECE, on behalf of the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) Knowledge and Innovation Exchange (KIX) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). As a part of GPE KIX's Observatory Initiative, this study, ‘Early childhood care and education: GPE KIX scoping study working paper’, explores two key themes related to ECE: access, specifically for children living in rural or remote areas and children living in poverty, and quality, including teaching and learning processes and capacity building for ECE teachers, caregivers and school leaders.
