Looking at the transport connections on the map: What kind of #transport or #logistics company do you think published it ❓
There are a lot of land based connections but there are a lot of #ferry connections too. So, is it ferry or, is it road transport, or #rail ?
The short answer is: It's #intermodal and, whilst intermodal in itself is nothing new, I have seen a significant increase in interest in that type of transportation.
Offering #consulting services being asked a lot of questions comes with the "territory" and, at the start of this year, most questions were about ferry operators, their routes, the ferry market, etc. Now the questions are all about why, and how, ferry operators can link to intermodal transportation.
I find the kind of questions I'm being asked are always a good indicator for #industry trends.
⛴️ DFDS , Stena Line and CLdN have recently announced / advertised the opening of new intermodal connections. Is there a better way to maximise utilisation of your vessel than running a train from, say, Milan to Zeebrugge?
The ferry industry is "connecting the dots"; #supplychain is not about a "ferry ticket" from #port A to port B; it's about end-to-end connection.
🏭 #Manufacturers and #retailers are looking for ways to transport their goods producing less #CO2. 🚚 Transport companies cannot procure #EV trucks fast enough to replace #diesel engined vehicles.
So, intermodal with about 50% less CO2 got a real boost.
Great then we have all the answers or, is it⁉️
Is there anything missing and, if so, what's the next step ❓
2 things in my opinion:
1️⃣ Easy visibility across the different modes of transport. You can (perhaps)track "your" train and, may be, even your unit on the train but, if you want to track your freight unit from (road based) pick up to train, to ferry, and road based collection it can become tricky. What's the answer? #interoperability (too much to elaborate here).
2️⃣ #TMS (Transport Management System) that can factor CO2 #emissions to map a wholistic (cost + CO2) transport cost.
Let's face it; in the not too distant future the cost of transport will no longer just be: #equipment + #fuel + #labour + #distance; it will be all of the aforementioned + CO2 #penalty ‼️ (if you have any doubts about that, just check out how the French government now tax new car buyers...)
