On January 24, 2025, the ECTRI Thematic Group on Economics & Policy hosted an engaging #webinar featuring Johannes Mesimäki from VTT. He explored how much car travel in Finland could be replaced by cycling to improve sustainability. The goal of the study was using data from a 2016 travel survey to segment different groups of people based on their travel habits and predict which trips could be cycled instead of driven. 📢 Another Exciting New Publication from Our Research Team!  🚀 In this new study, our researchers Mehrnaz Asadi, M. Baran Ulak, and Karst Geurs in collaboration with Wendy Weijermars from SWOV developed a cutting-edge methodological framework for conducting zone-based traffic safety and accessibility analyses. 📝 This innovative approach integrates route choice modelling and four-step modelling (including trip purpose, origin-destination, and alternative routes), resulting in a novel zone-based crash risk estimation that factors in traffic crashes and trip characteristics. 📊 The findings also showed the importance of considering route choice variations in accessibility analysis to avoid overestimating accessibility levels. #Accessibility #TrafficSafety #RouteChoice #Methodology Read more here 👇

Data 4 All partners in Belgium (Leiedal, City of Kortrijk and VIVES University of Applied Sciences) want to work more data-driven, improve and expand existing ad hoc data sharing initiatives into a structural vertical data sharing platform between regional and municipal governments. This platform will support practical applications to facilitate data driven decision making on mobility policies that can be developed, tested and then applied to other municipalities in the region. The first practical use-case is related to data-driven cycling policy in Kortrijk. Participatory Research Methods at the SLE 🌟 - a message from the 62nd cohort of the SLE postgraduate study programme: 📋 Same task - different results ✅ 🗺️ In our course about #participatory #research methods we split up into two groups which had the same mapping task. 📍 Each #group had to draw a map of Berlin indicating the most important places for the professional and private life of the group members. 🤯 Even though both groups had the same assignment, the results look very different - this shows how much a group process can also rely on the #individuals within the group. 😴 And maybe you did ask yourself: “Why seen with the eyes of lazy people?” - Well, to split the whole group into two sub-groups the “sport lovers” went to one room and the rest stood in the other room - even too lazy to move. 😉 🪩🚲🏐 But as you can see: the “lazy” group is not even that lazy as they also enjoy activities as dancing, cycling around the city or playing beachvolleyball.   #InternationalCooperation #Mapping #Berlin #GroupProcess #Urban #SustainableDevelopment #sleberlin #Studies

In Edinburgh today joining the joint hubs event on achieving resilient freight electromobility as part of our contribution to TransiT Digital Twinning for Transport Decarbonisation - fascinating range of opinions / discussions on the table, from a rail perspective we see ourselves as a long distance mode with road for the last mile but interesting to get perspectives from others around removing traffic from roads in urban settings etc. Understanding the policy drivers is clearly going to be a big part of this puzzle. Great news to start this new year! 👁❤️🖐 The Environmental & Energy Center (MEC) recently participated in an international workshop in Kraków, Poland, as part of the Energy Literacy for Youth (ELY) project. MEC brought its 30 years of expertise in fostering green networks and community-based initiatives to this collaborative effort. A central element of MEC’s contribution was the #EyesHeartsHands Urban Revolution project, which is pioneering the creation of an energy community during the renovation of Gadehavegård in Denmark.
