Dr. Asli Aslan is the Founding Director of the Institute for Water and Health and Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Georgia Southern University. The Institute for Water and Health (IWH) at Georgia Southern brings the latest scientific advancements to communities, a mission made possible through the vital support of generous donors. For example, IWH’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities are unparalleled in the region, providing the ability to test a wide range of chemicals and biological agents in water. These labs also serve as a hub for training students from multiple disciplines, equipping the next generation of water researchers with the skills needed to tackle global water challenges. Donors are not only helping IWH protect the world’s most valuable resource but also contributing to the growth of the economy through the development and application of new technologies that safeguard our water for future generations.

Check out what O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs students are up to at the end of the semester! Sam Winters, PE Ryan Sims, and Ramon Gonzales modeled CO2 emissions in the United States, finding year-over-year increases leading to higher levels of poor air quality. Check out their ArcGIS Storymap to learn more!
I had been looking forward to taking SPEA-E529: Application of Geographic Information Systems since I started the MPA program at the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs six semesters ago (who wouldn't with a course title like that?). I finally took it in my last semester of the program and it did not disappoint. Professor Courtney Page-Tan does a wonderful job teaching the course. For our final assignment, students are to use Esri's ArcGIS Pro to analyze an issue in the realm of climate, public health, public safety, infrastructure, resilience, or sustainability. My group mates, Ryan Sims and Ramon Gonzales, and I selected emissions from energy generation and public health as our area of focus. It is somewhat rare for coursework to make sense to share outside of the context of the classroom, but this assignment is uniquely sharable, and as such here it is: https://arcg.is/1uS8jD0

🌍 NEW PUBLICATION 🌊 I am thrilled to share that I have had the pleasure of co-authoring, alongside Gabriele Goettsche-Wanli, the article 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 ‘𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲’ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗮 𝗩𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁? In this article, and based on the existing definitions, we analyse whether ecocide could be applied in a marine context, with particular attention given to thresholds and the nature of the act. We then consider the potential application in a marine context of some of the components of the definitions of ecocide, with bottom trawling selected for a deeper analysis. 👉 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eZSwx27Y

I am pleased to share a publication co-authored by Ana Berdzenishvili and myself, published last year on behalf of REC Caucasus and commissioned by the UfU Institute. This study examines the status and conditions of climate-related participation, providing specific examples of participatory policy-making in Georgia. The primary aim is to assess the extent of civil society involvement in national policy processes related to the Paris Agreement and to identify barriers to meaningful and effective participation.
