An estimated 22 million+ renter households are considered rent burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing. Subsidies are often used by developers when building, with those savings being passed on to tenants. A growing trend is for developers to work with houses of worship, which often have excess land and limited funds. Working together and done right, developments can be built that provide affordable housing, decrease the dependence on subsidies, and offer places of worship much needed funding for the work they do. But unfortunately some faith based institutions are being taken advantage of given that real estate is not their area of expertise. This is leading to the creation of training programs for faith based leaders to help them make more informed decisions. https://lnkd.in/gx8y-8Dg

At the Data that Makes a Difference Conference in Calgary this week, we had the opportunity to learn from Elders, front-line service providers, economists, multi-disciplinary researchers, policy analysts, and organizational leaders about the importance of democratizing data related to homelessness. There were fundamental philosophical differences in the room; some held the view that we should assume everyone is acting in their own rationale self-interest and that people make housing decisions accordingly. Others held the view that this assumption is at the heart of our problems – we ought to coordinate, share, and cooperate because not everyone is offered the same opportunities at birth.  System-wide housing barriers such as disability and discrimination are unaddressed under assumptions of rational self-interest. Despite these philosophical differences, the conversations remained respectful and the need for transparent data sources that fully respect privacy rights was supported.
