Shoots are one of the most fun, stressful, unpredictable and exciting parts of a new launch. This one was no different. A big part of that is the weather. Trying to find even a half day window during the unprecedented couple of wet months we've had in the UK was seriously frustrating. And then the chance of everyone being available at short notice, all before the shoot even starts. This is the third time working with Fergus Coyle and we are finding a nice rhythm. The concept for #EDIT003 was two people - relationship undefined, but clearly well known to each other, and the warmth shows in the photos - on an all-day ride. It could be an #AUDAX, or it might just be a nice day in the saddle. We shot locally (as we always do) including using an electric cargo bike for tracking shots. We are graced with a huge range of scenery near Bristol so it was easy to get a sense of them being on a journey. I also worked with Ruben Cleghorn for the first time to capture some BTS, and he's done an amazing job with very little guidance (or budget) and I personally love this kind of authentic footage. And the models are both completely authentic long distance riders. Note I didn't say athletes. Although they both have some impressive stats to their name if care to ask. #EDIT003 launches tomorrow at midday only via www.kostume.cc - so much content coming that I am proud to share. An embarrassment of riches, really, considering the scale we are currently operating at vs probably every other brand. But, like with everything, those limitations often force you to strip things back and you end up with a better, purer result. I firmly believe that this blend of culture, art, and sports is no accident. Just kidding, of course. With the Paris 2024 Olympics set to begin in a few days, the Centre Pompidou has unveiled a new PoMo-style skatepark on its renowned forecourt to celebrate the event. The Cycloid Piazza, a skateable sculpture created by artist Raphael Zarka in collaboration with Jean-Benoît Vétillard, features a vibrant combination of geometric shapes and bold colors. The street skatepark includes a bright blue half-pipe along with a variety of quarter pipes, half-bowl stairs, and manual pads for performing tricks. This skatepark serves not only as a sporting venue but also as a cultural hub, merging skate culture, art, music, and sports. With the furore over the Jaguar new identity, I wanted to contextualise other car identities. Jaguar is a brand that holds a lot of goodwill certainly countrywide and worldwide. Gerry McGovern is undoubtedly a great designer, having created the recent Land Rover Defender and Range Rover and I think the new Jaguar will be great. But, the marketing is in question, the visual language is in question. We know that Jaguar are planning to go completely electric and to double the price point. Nobody has a problem with that. But taken that heritage equity and brand goodwill and binning it does not seem right. So how might you look at it? Following from yesterdays post here’s a clip from the official launch event of the Jaguar Type 00. As they’re Chief Creative Officer Prof Gerry McGovern OBE says ‘some may love it now, some may grow to love it later and some may not’ and we’ve certainly noticed from social media, our post included, that it’s a design concept and creative direction that certainly challenges convention and has divided opinions. We’re so used to ‘the same’ these days, it makes me wonder if it’s actually a bold, striking change that creates our own fears ….. One of the most captivating moments of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games' opening ceremony was the mesmerising ride of a silver mechanical horse across the Seine, named "Cavale de Zeus" 🐎. This ambitious design and creative project was achieved through the collaboration of two French companies: Atelier BLAM and MMProcess, under great secrecy over the last year or so 🤫. There is an exercise at the end on the creative and logistical challenges of such a project - after a look at the design and build of the mechanical horse. Atelier BLAM, a design agency based in Nantes, conceptualised and created the 1.80-metre-tall mechanical horse using aluminium shells welded together and covered in silver leaf, with a 3D-printed metal head and hooves. Inspired by Eadweard Muybridge's pioneering photographic studies of movement from the late 19th century, the team at Atelier BLAM meticulously designed the horse to replicate a lifelike gallop 🏇. Talking to Ouest-France, Lara Pouclet of Atelier BLAM said, “We had to meticulously consider every detail, from the extended hooves to the curvature of the legs and the articulation of the limbs.” MMProcess, a company from Quiberon, Brittany, developed the nearly invisible boat that carried the horse. Made of carbon and powered by an electric propeller, this 14-metre-long float could reach speeds up to 50 km/h 🚤. It was specially designed to support the horse and navigate the Seine smoothly during the ceremony. Reflecting on the intensity and risks of the project, Morgane Suquart of MMProcess said, "They wanted someone to train the rider, and since I was deeply involved in the design, I was chosen. It was quite dangerous, and they didn't find anyone else suitable." Despite the risks, Morgane embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm and skill.
