🤔 We've all heard of braille, but who's the person behind it? Welcome to a potted history of Louis Braille, as we celebrate 200 years of the tactile system. #Braille200 Braille was pioneered by a young Frenchman in the nineteenth century, Louis Braille. Louis lost his sight in a childhood accident. Aged 10, he was sent to the Royal Institution for Blind Youth where he was first introduced to the idea of using a coded system of raised dots. Charles Barbier, a captain in Napoleon's army, visited the school to demonstrate his "night writing". This was a tactile system designed for soldiers to send and receive messages at night without speaking. It used raised dots and dashes rather than actual letters. Louis quickly realised how useful Barbier's system could be, but thought it was too complicated. Louis worked hard to develop his own version of the code, using just six dots, arranged in two columns of three dots, like a domino, to represent the standard alphabet. By 1824, aged just 15, Louis found 63 ways to use a six-dot cell in an area no larger than a fingertip. Louis Braille's system is now used by blind and partially sighted people for reading and writing all over the world. It has been adapted to almost every known language. Here at RNIB, we've continued to fight for braille and the rights of blind and partially sighted people to have access to information and the opportunity to express themselves in written word. Since our first braille book was published in 1871, RNIB’s library now shares over 25,000 braille books and music scores with our members every year. We are the largest publisher of braille in Europe. I love books like this! 𝘎𝘳𝘪𝘵: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 by 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐃𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 is a fantastic read. The only comparison I can make is with the writings of 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐭 (please correct me if I’m wrong!). Although it may not seem large at just 352 pages, this seemingly small volume offers a comprehensive exploration of what makes someone successful, how to define, measure, develop, and nurture it. All of this relates to grit, which could also be described as stubbornness in a more Polish context. The author demonstrates that grit is one of the most fundamental traits required for progress in work, sports, and personal development, often surpassing other factors such as IQ, EQ, academic achievements, or even the often-celebrated talent. Not only does she present evidence-based research findings (and if a claim isn't based on evidence, she clearly states that), but, and this is what I love most, she also offers various perspectives on the topic with clear causal links and insights into what influences our main character—grit. Unfortunately, grit is often just potential that we need to leverage through what 𝐃𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 calls deliberate practice. Furthermore, the author explores whether we can find happiness in this pursuit and whether it can be compared to the blessed state of flow or to the daily grind. These insights are not solely the author’s musings; they are also informed by discussions with practitioners from various fields, from the military to the arts. This is not the end, as the book serves as a vast resource for further reading, including lectures, books, articles, and expert opinions that can deepen your understanding of the topic.
