Working historically through tightly-controlled "APs" (authorized dealers), Rolex drastically changed its go-to-market model last year acquiring the multi-brand retailer Bucherer. While the move was defensive to protect its interest within the Bucherer house, the most significant impact is the central place Rolex CPO ("certified pre-owned") takes in its overall strategy. Thanks to Bucherer's critical position in the growing yet fragmented and uncertain secondary market, Rolex now controls both pricing and supply at retail and second-hand market, ensuring it can capture of the largest possible margin at both sides. Being an active actor in the second-hand market, Rolex protects itself from unwanted resale speculations and counterfeits, while promoting a sought-after price-premium for CPO products. Why is this good for Rolex? Because they aspire for the real deal-future potential customers in the making! 💼 3️⃣ The Blissfully Ignorant: Bought a fake without realizing it. Bad news for them, but these imitations are part of the game in markets like China and Thailand, fueling what’s called Grey Market Infringement.
