I had the privilege to attend the NATO-Ukraine Defense Innovators Forum through the Emerging Threats Group, Oxford Changing Character of War Centre , organised by the US Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) alongside NATO Innovation, Hybrid, and Cyber Division. The forum underscored the intersection of emerging technologies, defense strategies, and battlefield realities. Here are the key takeaways: - People-Centric Defense Innovation: Bringing together stakeholders and building trust from government, industry, and academia is vital for delivering rapid, scalable solutions to the frontline. - Interoperability: Common software, operating systems, and open standards are crucial for battlefield integration, especially for UAVs and CUAVs and EW. - Joint Capability Development: Focus on improving military systems through joint efforts, rather than merely increasing weapon supplies. Emphasize doctrine, training, and architectural planning. - Rapid Acquisition and Innovation: Speed in acquisition and adapting to battlefield needs are essential. The US Defense Innovation Unit's rapid software approval process contrasts sharply with traditional timelines. - Risk-Taking in Innovation: Embrace uncertainty and volatility as hallmarks of true innovation. Direct feedback from end users, the Ukrainian military, to the industry/ manufacturers is critical for refining technologies. - Manufacturing and Logistics: Victory hinges on manufacturing prowess and logistical efficiency. Quantitative disadvantages on the battlefield can be overcome by qualitative advantages through innovative manufacturing and logistics strategies. - Autonomy in Warfare: The future of warfare will increasingly involve robots and autonomous systems, reducing the need for human soldiers on the front lines and enhancing operational efficiency. - Learning from Ukraine: Battlefield lessons are shaping Western defense policies and will be crucial for future conflicts. The rapid adaptation and testing of technologies in Ukraine provide invaluable insights. - Investment Ecosystem: There is a growing need for venture capital in dual-use startups, with an emphasis on mission-driven investments and understanding governmental procurement strategies. To empower dual-use and deep tech start-ups NATO Innovation Fund (NIF) and NATO DIANA in Europe and BRAVE1 in Ukraine are essential. - Role of Academia: Research labs and academic institutions like CCW in Oxford can play a pivotal role in defense innovation, leveraging interdisciplinary talent and research to address battlefield challenges. These discussions highlighted the imperative of harnessing innovative defense technologies and rapid adaptability to ensure strategic advantage and success on the battlefield. Looking forward to integrating these insights into our work at CCW and continuing the discussions with some of the speakers from the Forum. #NATO #DefenseInnovation #Ukraine #EmergingTech #CCW #DefenseTech #BattlefieldInnovation #DualUseTech

It is a DOD priority to help innovative, qualified companies survive the valley-of-death and ensure leap-ahead technologies turn into defense capabilities that will keep our troops safe and mission-effective. The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs are leading the charge in this endeavor. Tectus Corporation, located in Saratoga, California, and funded in part by SBIR/STTR – America’s Seed Fund – has developed an image display so small it can fit on a contact lens, which can potentially help warfighters more rapidly access and integrate critical information on the battlefield and during training exercises. Earlier this month, Maynard Holliday, who performs the duties of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Critical Technologies, visited Tectus to learn how it is creating cutting-edge micro-LED technology and its potential applications to support the DoD mission. For more information about DoD SBIR/STTR Program Office and how it can help companies more successfully navigate the defense space, visit https://www.sbir.gov/about

My #ParkLife on Tour journey is getting more and more interesting now. I've just posted my blog from my interview with Jyoti Hirani-Driver, the interim COO of NATO DIANA. Yes NATO as in that NATO. This is a programme that seeks the best innovators to meet the challenge areas put forward that span topics such as critical national infrastructure, energy, and people. It certainly not all about offensive technology, more about dual-use innovations to help civil and defence scenarios. There is funding involved too, you will be happy to hear, as in 100,000 Euro for phase 1, and up to 300,000 Euro for phase two, to help build the business and innovation up. https://lnkd.in/eu9eMHAE

Yesterday we launched a new report with MD One Ventures. UK Defence Tech 2024 analyses the innovative companies that make up the UK’s defence technology sector. The report looks at 384 high-growth companies in the UK that are developing technologies with defence applications or have received funding from organisations with a focus on the security and defence sectors. We won’t varnish the truth: investment in the sector fell a staggering 75%. But alongside the core defence tech companies, this report also delves into the “dual-use” aspects of defence technology. These are companies with offerings that can serve both military and civilian uses, operating across a range of sectors adjacent to traditional defence technology. Whilst private investment has fallen in the core industry of defence technology, our report shows the relative resilience of investment in these dual-use sectors. In the report you’ll also find profiles of companies leading the way in dual-use sectors: Materials Nexus, Greenjets, Labrys, Lab 1. As William McManners puts it, “the future of defence investment lies not as an exquisite sector, but in integrated, multifaceted strategies that leverage the strengths of dual-use markets and expertise." #BeauhurstInsights #DefenceTech #UKDefenceTech
