🌍 Through the Cool Coalition, IFC and UN Environment Programme had an event on passive cooling at #COP29. If you missed the livestream, recap is below. Facts: 💠 Cooling consumes 20% of the world’s electricity – and that demand could triple by 2050. 💠 Passive cooling can curb the growth in demand by 24%. 💠 Passive cooling is both a mitigation strategy (lowering demand for ACs) and adaptation strategy (helping building occupants address rising heat). Solutions: 🏗️ #EDGEBuildings is a great solution to help developers, building owners, and investors understand upfront costs and payback for passive cooling strategies. Many of the panelists shared how they incorporate EDGE into their programs on passive cooling, from large commercial buildings to self-built housing. IFC - International Finance Corporation's Sustainable Cooling Initiative helps firms looking for IFC financing with finding best solutions for passive cooling as part of their green building strategies. 👀 Watch the recap video from: https://ow.ly/T21850Uf8MX More recordings of discussions from the COP29 Buildings and Cooling Pavilion from: https://lnkd.in/eUgGuiDp IFC Climate & Sustainability Rusmir Musić Lily Riahi Mirey Atallah Maurice Akech Iman Gawad Anshul Abbasi Diep Nguyen-van Houtte

Passive cooling strategies are a crucial step toward sustainable development and energy efficiency, especially as global energy demands for cooling continue to rise. From my experience in sustainable architectural design, integrating passive design elements like optimized building orientation, natural ventilation pathways, and thermal insulation has proven to significantly enhance cooling efficiency while reducing energy consumption. Initiatives like EDGE Buildings and IFC’s Sustainable Cooling Initiative are invaluable for scaling these solutions across various building types. It’s inspiring to see these efforts being highlighted at COP29, as they pave the way for more resilient and energy-efficient buildings.

🌎 We are thrilled to highlight one of our distinguished panelists at Climate Week NYC, Thatcher Bell from The Clean Fight, which is running The Empire Technology Prize! The Empire Technology Prize is a groundbreaking program designed to fast-track the commercialization of clean energy solutions that will drastically reduce carbon emissions in New York State, particularly in space heating for buildings, one of the most energy-intensive sectors. With seven impressive Finalists across start-ups and clean-tech innovators, the Prize is fostering solutions that help achieve New York’s ambitious climate goals. During the event, The Clean Fight discussed how the Empire Technology Prize is driving significant R&D investments and fostering scalable clean energy solutions. Here are some important takeaways from the panel: 🚀 What are the key challenges for business and government organizations trying to decarbonize HVAC systems? Thatcher explained that the economic case for decarbonization isn’t always compelling for building owners, and different building types often require unique, tailored solutions. He stressed economic incentives and making a clear business case are key to encouraging building owners and operators to adopt decarbonization technologies like heat pumps and refrigerant management systems. Governments can provide incentives for upgrading to low-GWP refrigerants and to improve the cost-benefit analysis for businesses considering these investments. 🚀 What has The Clean Fight learned in developing and running the Empire Technology Prize? Thatcher Bell explained that many tall buildings in New York are heated by steam, and transitioning to low-temperature heat pumps would require a complete overhaul of their HVAC systems. The challenge is to develop "drop-in" replacements for steam systems that use lower-GWP refrigerants. The Clean Fight is at the forefront of innovative, scalable solutions that help decarbonize New York’s buildings and reduce refrigerant emissions—paving the way for a cleaner future. Are you a building owner/operator, tenant, or MEP interested in learning more about high temperature heat pumps and innovative distribution solutions? Reach out to The Clean Fight to be a part of the movement toward a greener future! 🔗 Learn more about The Clean Fight and the Empire Technology Prize: https://lnkd.in/e-ksma27 #ClimateWeekNYC #BuildingDecarbonization #HVAC #EmpireTechPrize

On Feb 7., a significant agreement was reached as nine states came together to promote heat pump sales. This memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlines ambitious targets for the penetration of heat pumps in residential heating, cooling, and water heating equipment sales, aiming for a 65% market share by 2030. Additionally, the long-term objective is for heat pumps to capture 90% of the HVAC and water heating market by 2040. So what does this mean? Essentially, increasing the adoption of heat pumps in homes and buildings will lead to a profound impact on reducing pollution and addressing the challenges of climate change. This agreement also encompasses the development of an "action plan" to facilitate the widespread electrification of residential buildings, laying the groundwork for the creation of zero-emission buildings which is what we do here at DCT as well. Orders no. 124 and 125 🌳 ✅ Energy from wastewater comes to Trier and Mechelen. We are proud to announce that the next two major heat transition projects have been contracted. With heat from wastewater, we are enabling climate-friendly heating and cooling in two new projects - in Germany and Belgium. As always, we will report on the installation of these systems in the respective municipal sewers. As a reminder: up to 15% of the heat demand in the building sector can be covered with wastewater heat recovered from the public sewer network. So far, this energy has been thrown away unused. Let's change that. #WastewaterHeatTransfer #Energy #Technology #Sustainability Jodi Guthrie Jenna DiFalco Jane Atkinson Gajwani Denise Breiteneicher Paul Kohl Beth Hostetter, PE Michael DiBara Danah Tench Michael McDonald, P.E., C.E.M.
