In today’s MainStage session at ISTE #ISTELive24 Ethan Mollick highlighted the role teachers play in education while exploring the integration of AI. This inspiring session reminded us, educators, that our journey with AI is just beginning. As Ethan aptly put it, “we are just living with the worst AI ever.” And this, underscores the importance of understanding the current limitations of AI, especially when it comes to evaluating student performance. Many educators rely on AI detectors that, often fail to deliver accurate results, and what’s worse, create falsely accusations on them. It is imperative for us to guide students in learning how to effectively collaborate with AI and to validate and curate AI-generated content, instead of just finding excuses not to trust their capabilities. This makes absolute sense as no course would be able to cope up with the advances while limiting the opportunity through individual discovery. what we can however ensure as faculty is that we encourage the spirit of inquiry (and not ban the use as I discovered in one school I was visiting). how does one bring its potential as a tool, a resource, an aide etc into our curriculum and discussions in the classroom. how do students from vernacular backgrounds get the learning started till these are not available in alternate languages OR how does a designer manage the redistribution of the time available now between the 'thinking' phase and the 'doing' phase not that the later part could become very time efficient (with practice)
