Building Cohesion to Support Student Success - A "Fellowship Insights" Blog Series In the final installment of the "Building Cohesion to Support Student Success" series, authors Laura Lara-Brady, Ph.D. and Nancy Romano Bailey, MPP, PPS explore how Career and Technical Education (CTE) can unify initiatives across California’s community colleges to strengthen economic and social mobility for students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Term three is on the horizon and in school-based career education that means decisions. Subject selection, HE or VET pathways, study destinations, gap year etc. For our kids it will feel like they're approaching a fork in the road with no map. They'll likely believe that only one road leads to success, so they'd better get it right. On 24th July I'm doing something a little different, a webinar for students. I'll share six ideas that will help senior secondary students think about their future with confidence. I hope to allay some fears and encourage optimism and adaptability. If you have 15-17 year olds in your life, encourage them to sign up. If you're old, you can sneak in too. I'll talk about: 🛣 Different kinds of post-school pathways. 🙃 Why it’s OK if you don’t know what you want to do. 🧠 Why it’s OK to change your mind. 💯 Why ATAR might not be as important as you think. 💻 How to research your options. 🤝 Who to talk to for help. 🚨 Attention Seniors! 🚨 Early college application deadlines are fast approaching—don’t miss out! Applying early can give you a head start in your college journey, but it’s important to know the difference between Early Decision and Early Action: 🔗Early Decision is binding—if you’re accepted, you must attend that college. ⌛ Early Action is non-binding—you’ll get an early response, but you’re not committed and can make your final choice by May 1. Make sure your applications are ready, and if you have questions, your ACCESS advisor is here to help! #CollegeBound #EarlyDecisionVsEarlyAction #CollegeApplicationSeason #PlanYourFuture

1st Year of Sixth Form… Hi Network. This is my first post and I thought it would be a great idea to share a recap of my experience of Year 12 as we draw nearer to the end of the academic year. ➡️ There was indeed a “jump”. By now, everyone has heard of the great and mighty jump that supposdely awaits us all after GCSEs as we prepare to receive the “shock of our lives” when starting A-Levels. This statement isn’t completely false but it’s also quite exaggerated at times. I will say that I underestimated the magnitude of this “jump” but it has also been a much-needed step to help me puzzle out this new learning style and environment. ➡️ Balance is needed. September to December were 3 months of my academic life where striking a balance between all 3 of my STEM subjects was tricky at times. However, I quickly learned that, for a short time, I needed to feel the discomfort of being outside of my comfort zone to grow into this new space. ➡️ Sixth form at a different school is great. Adapting to change has never been extremely difficult for me and I really embraced the change of going to a sixth form completely different from my secondary school in all aspects - class sizes, location, teachers, teaching style, environment, friends. Personally, I needed a new, fresh start. Not to run from a past but to widen my horizons for the future and I am very content with that decision. ➡️ All the “what if’s”. Moments of uncertainty do arise here and there, and when caught up in the midst of a wide array of other students with such complex and niche ambitions, it can be tempting to think “what if I did that?” or “what if I chose xyz subject instead?” The bottom line is, each path is completely individual. In life, there are roles designated for certain individuals to fulfill. Like the enzyme lock and key model :)

I'm looking forward Times Higher Education's Student Success summit, where I will be diving into one of the most discussed and contested value propositions for generative AI in education: personalized learning. As the capabilities and shortcomings of GAI technologies continue to develop at a frenetic pace, and as learning- and education-centered examinations of GAI identify opportunities and challenges that go beyond the hype cycle, the slogans, and the influencers' talking points, we need to unpack what we imagine when we invoke the "personalized" in educational settings, how we implicitly are conveying an understanding (or not) of how learning happens and what enables it, and the alignment (or not) between GAI technologies and the relationships we want to build with and among our students.
