During #StudentParentMonth in September, the California Alliance for Student Parent Success released two reports on #studentparents that uplift who they are, their needs, and the importance of collecting more data on their experiences. California Competes | EdTrust-West | Michelson 20MM Foundation ✔️ "Juggling Roles and Achieving Goals: The California Student Parents Almanac" brings together current federal data on student parents to shed more light on who they are—their demographics, academic experiences, financial situations, and the barriers they face in accessing quality education and completing their credentials. https://ow.ly/2QLf50TRQQy ✔️ "Making the Invisible Visible: Taking Stock of How the California State University Collects and Uses Data About Parenting Students" shares insights on work underway to improve data collection and support #parentingstudents, and highlights significant unaddressed gaps. Also of note: teacher absences have increased, too. It is well established in the literature that workplace #absenteeism is correlated with stress and poor working conditions (e.g., bad leadership, inflexible schedules, limited time off). The impacts are also well understood: low morale, decreased productivity, increased safety risks. In a school environment this looks like less learning and more disruption when teachers have to adjust the curriculum to accommodate chronically absent students. It means students are learning next to nothing when there are not enough substitute teachers due to the current nationwide shortage. What could our education system look like if teachers were better compensated? What will the long-term impacts of student (and teacher) absenteeism be if current trends are not reversed?

For the second consecutive year, the CSU welcomed an all-time high number of first-time, first-year students for fall 2024—more than 68,500 new students across its 23 #CalState universities. 🎉   Preliminary data also show an overall enrollment increase of 2% from the previous year to more than 461,000 students, as well as a similar percentage growth in the number of California residents enrolled. CSU’s enrollment for 2024 is also reflective of California’s dynamically diverse demographics, with more than half of first-year students from historically underserved groups (Latinx, Black, Native American).
