🚀 Ever wonder if cameras could see better than humans in tricky situations? 🤔 Bernard Maacaron a brilliant master's student, spent six months with our EDPR team tackling this exact challenge! In his research, Bernard made event cameras—those high-tech devices that detect changes in light—work even in low-motion or static scenes. Imagine a camera that doesn't miss a beat, even when nothing seems to be happening! 📸 Using brain-inspired tech called Spiking Neural Networks 🧠, Bernard developed a system that helps these cameras "remember" and "see" in scenes where most cameras would go blind. Perfect for robots and self-driving cars navigating our dynamic world! 🤖🌍 We are really proud of his defense, which gave him the maximum final score 🎉 Big thanks to his supervisors Chiara Bartolozzi, Arren Glover, and Fabio Solari. #Innovation #NeuromorphicVision #AI #Tech #Robotics #EventCameras #EDPR

Robots will become more prevalent in our daily lives in the future. How will we train robots to interact with humans? We explore this question in our recent paper that is accepted to #ICRA2024. Previously, robots were trained for human object handovers using real human motion data, which is expensive to collect and doesn’t scale well. We've overcome this limitation by leveraging the power of generative AI, enabling us to scale to 100x more objects and human motions. Our research shows that robots trained purely on synthetic human motions can successfully interact with real human users. This demonstrates the potential to train robots effectively without relying on real human motion data, as long as we can accurately reproduce human-like motions. Extremely cool work from researchers at Stanford University, Columbia University, J.P. Morgan AI Research, and Carnegie Mellon University on enables robots to learn new manipulation skills without the need for teleoperating physical robots in the real world by: 1) generating object flow based on textual task description with an AI model trained on human demonstration videos, and 2) mapping generated object flow to robot actions with an AI model trained on simulated robot play.
