Troubling trends in this year's EdReports State of the Market report. HQIM are now readily available, but only 35% of ELA teachers and 51% of math teachers use HQIM consistently. Why? One reason could be a lack of preparation to use HQIM effectively. "Data from recent years reveal that teacher preparation programs have traditionally dedicated insufficient time to skillful use of provided curricula. For example, only 38% of programs emphasize how to skillfully use and modify curricula, while 71% continue to support developing personal lesson and unit plans (Table 9). This imbalance highlights a critical area for improvement in how we prepare educators to develop their practice." Can #CBPL fill the gaps left by teacher preparation programs?

This EdReports study speaks to an implementation problem. High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) exist. They are out there. But, "providing the necessary support for successful implementation is critical, including long-term, curriculum-based professional learning for all teachers." The thing is, focusing only on PL for teachers skips a step. It puts all of the onus and responsibility on each individual teacher without addressing the systemic issue. "The report's findings underscore the need for states, districts, and schools to go beyond simply selecting quality K–12 curriculum." Teachers need systemic support in order for implementation to be effective. This means that school leaders - specifically instructional leadership teams (ILTs) - need to be 100% invested in the curricular selection AND implementation. ILTs that are: ✔ normed around "standards-aligned instruction," ✔ visiting classrooms regularly to "ensure every student has access to the quality, engaging, grade-level content they deserve in order to learn and grow" ✔ providing teachers with clear and actionable feedback to that effect shift the conditions from individual teachers in pressure cookers, to a school-wide approach to systemic change. Let's work smarter.

Today, I was developing generalizations based on the Oxford Math Primary Curriculum and reflecting on how this written curriculum could be easily adopted by schools and educators. My simple idea is to create guiding questions for teachers to use after teaching the facts and skills. These questions will help students develop conceptual thinking, understand the 'how' and 'why,' and discover relationships between mathematical concepts. The curriculum I provide for my partner schools includes detailed teacher questions, making it easily accessible for both teachers and schools.
