#WednesdayWisdom "A school is not just a building, but a place that houses the souls of teachers, who are the most important influence in shaping children and the society. As families increasingly become nuclear and parents spend more and more time on their work, it is important to nurture habits in school, such as: (a) Building imagination, courage and wisdom by exposure to stories, poetry, festivals and art, with discussions and expressions. (b) Doing all types of work and sharing responsibilities to strengthen determination and world experiences to respect ourselves and others. (c) Practising rituals to build positive attitudes leading to happiness." These are the words of Mr. Sanjay Dalmia whose article we published on our blog earlier this month. Today, 5th May 2024 is World African Heritage Day. As an African child growing up in an African country, I was never once taught about African heritage. What could have gone so wrong that an African child on the African continent learns about European culture thousands of miles away and nothing about their own heritage. That can only birth self hate for the African child because surely if my heritage is not worth learning, it must not be good and the one i am learning about must be better, Knowledge of and acceptance of your heritage does not create hatred for others. In my opinion, it develops self confidence in your roots, they hold you up and you are more accepting of others. You can honour others because you value yours first. All African countries must really make the teaching of African history a priority so that the future is made up of Africans who love their heritage and themselves. If you do not love yourself, how can others love you? My new book, 'Twenty African Queens Every Young Girl Should Know About' is my response to what I lacked growing up. It is for every African girl to understand their heritage and therefore their story and their voice. It is also for every girl child to know there are alternative stories beyond the dominant narrative of looking down on African stories. It is for girls everywhere to see the strength, power, love and leadership of African Queens from history and be inspired to always stand in their truth, trust themselves and lead. Launching next month , the books are available to pre-order at:: https://lnkd.in/eF_PnysD Order for your daughters, nieces, cousins, friends, god-daughters and even yourselves. #Africanheritage #Africanstories #worldAfricanheritageday #storytelling #history #newbook #preorder

My studies have included researching how an individual’s culture has influenced who they have tried to become. Studying one’s own household or ancestry often provides part of the answer. The next questions, though, is what events impacted your family history and how does this shape your household? To learn more about that, I have spent the last 16 months reading books to answer the question: “What is an American?” Although I initially read books related to this question as a part of my undergrad (History, 2000), the picture shows books that have helped with my query during this effort. I’m about to read about the US Civil War next and only have a couple of recommendations. What books would you recommend to assist my exploration in American culture that focus on 1860 to 1870?

Is your child starting GCSE History in September or entering Year 11? 🫤 Not sure what’s out there on the internet to help them in terms of getting to know the content? 🌐 Today’s recommendation is www.alphahistory.com The website is written by history teachers, academics and other professionals. The site mainly covers modern history topics such as The Russian Revolution and the Vietnam War. However, it does also cover the American and French Revolutions. Most topics contain documents, a glossary of key terms, an explanation of who’s who and activities. A really well written and organised website! #GCSEHistory #Year10 #Year11 #widerreading #Historywebsites #GCSEHistoryrevision #examsuccess #historyteachers #historysuccess #historytutor #parentingteens #parentsofteens #studyinghistory

Translation: legislating goodness is nigh impossible. Becoming better is a quest with yourself. To do so out of compulsion by the state (something a lot of people today are forgetting - as if we can legislate the utopia into existence) is to lose the magic of self-transformation. #selfdevelopment #history #statesmanship Stay tuned! More enlightening material incoming. Cultivate excellence.
