This system was patterned after a method original launched around 1086 when all the knowledge on a topic could be contained in one building. Henry II wanted more from Oxford to compete with University of Paris Past time for a new model. In the US, too many, relied too heavily on inflated tuition and guaranteed government loan money. (the kids don't have to repay, but the institutions kept the money) Time for a new model. Some might say that those institutions with large endowments more resemble a PE firm than an institution focused on education. Tough for the little ones to compete on this axis. Each situation is different, but the model is long past due for disruption.
