Exciting news for the cybersecurity industry in Singapore! The Singapore Computer Society (SCS) has launched a new Skills Pathway for Cybersecurity, addressing the global talent shortage in this critical field. This initiative, announced by Education Minister Chan Chun Sing, aims to provide a clear roadmap for individuals looking to transition into cybersecurity careers. Key highlights: • The pathway outlines necessary skills and certifications for aspiring cybersecurity professionals • 13 major employers, including ST Engineering and Temasek, are supporting this initiative • Participating companies will offer internships and job interviews to candidates with specific industry certifications This comes at a crucial time, as the World Economic Forum reports a global need for nearly 4 million cybersecurity professionals, with the Asia-Pacific region facing the largest shortage. #Week3 at VIEH Group Global Internship #Project Name: Image Encryption Team Member: Anshika Dhankhar I got a chance to learn about USA Foreign Education from Saquib Saifee through a recorded session by VIEH Group. A Conversation with Saquib Saifee on Foreign Education in Cybersecurity I recently had the opportunity to attend a recorded session by the VIEH Group, featuring Saquib Saifee, who shared his insights on pursuing a Master's degree in cybersecurity in the United States. Here are the key takeaways from the session: Scope of Cybersecurity Jobs While there are ample opportunities for cybersecurity professionals in both India and the United States, the latter offers a wider range of roles and domains within the field. However, securing positions with federal contracts often requires a green card or residency status. Pursuing a Master's Degree Obtaining a Master's degree in cybersecurity is a viable pathway to securing employment in the field. International students typically receive a three-year extension after completing their studies, with the possibility of further extending their stay. Another option is to secure a job transfer through an existing employer. Course Content and Experience Master's programs in cybersecurity share a common curriculum, focusing on core concepts and practical applications. Saquib's program required 30 credits, with each course contributing three credits. As an international student, he was required to take at least nine subjects over three semesters. Saquib's experience as an IBM Certified Cybersecurity Analyst involved a rigorous eight-part course with weekly assessments. He found the program valuable for its practical approach and project-based learning. Balancing Studies and Work International students are generally allowed to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week. Exceeding this limit can lead to legal consequences, including deportation. Saquib emphasized the importance of perseverance and maintaining focus on one's goals. Choosing Between Masters and Certifications The decision to pursue a Master's degree or certifications depends on individual circumstances, including experience, financial obligations, and career goals. While a Master's degree offers a formal education, certifications can provide specialized skills. Factors Contributing to Academic Success Saquib attributed the success of international students to their punctuality and dedication. Professors in the United States often engage in research and maintain active involvement in their field. Government funding supports research initiatives in cybersecurity. Timing of a Master's Degree While it's possible to pursue a Master's degree after gaining work experience, it's generally recommended to do so earlier in one's career. The decision ultimately depends on individual circumstances and preferences. #viehgroup #internship #cybersecurity #team #security

“My name is Stella Ndiritu from Kenya. After finishing my degree, landing a role felt impossible because the job market was brutal. The first few months post-graduation were demoralizing. Despite being highly motivated to join the cybersecurity field, my skills needed further development to align with available opportunities. Just when I was on the verge of giving up on my dream career, I discovered the CyberGirls Fellowship, and everything changed. The program immersed me in learning opportunities that shaped my cybersecurity journey. Empowered by the knowledge and connections I gained through Cybergirls, I aced my first interview after the program and landed an internship. While a full-time role remained my ultimate goal, I recognized the internship as an opportunity to showcase my technical abilities and gain valuable industry experience. CyberGirls gave me the confidence to embrace the opportunity. My dedication impressed the management team, who recognized my potential early on, and my supervisor advocated for a permanent position. What started as an internship blossomed into a full-time role. The tech industry, especially cybersecurity, can be intimidating for women without technical know-how. Yet, CyberGirls fosters a supportive environment where my skills—not my gender—are nurtured and valued. My experience challenges the myth that women can't excel in cybersecurity. Moreover, the fellowship connected me with other talented women in the field, leading to a network of like-minded professionals. Now, with my confidence soaring, I'm ready to tackle new challenges every step of the way. The CyberGirls fellowship empowered me to continuously break down barriers and forge my path in the exciting world of cybersecurity. This is just the beginning, and I’m incredibly grateful for their unwavering support. The future is bright!” PS: What character trait helped Stella land a permanent role? #CyberGirls

🔒 Breaking the Cybersecurity Myths: Let's Get Real 🔒 I've been observing some trends in the cybersecurity industry that we need to address. The field is booming with opportunities, but there are some misconceptions that could hinder genuine progress. 🌐💡 1️⃣ Seeking Skills, Not Fame: It's disheartening to see some entering cybersecurity for fame rather than skill development. The real reward lies in continuously learning and mastering new skills to stay ahead of evolving threats. Cybersecurity is a journey, not a destination. 📚🧠 2️⃣ Realistic Salary Expectations: Students pursuing degrees with cybersecurity specialization often expect starting packages of 15 lakhs. While the earning potential is high, fresh graduates should focus on building a solid foundation through internships, personal projects, and certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Network+. 🌟💼 3️⃣ OSCP for Startups?: It's surprising to see 10-person startups requiring OSCP as mandatory. While certifications like OSCP are valuable, they aren’t always necessary for entry-level roles. Startups have unique needs that might differ from large corporations. It's crucial to understand these requirements and tailor your skills accordingly. 🏢📜 4️⃣ Generic Applications: Blindly commenting "interested" on job opportunities won’t make you stand out. Instead, study the job description and reach out to the respective team with a personalized approach. Showcase your genuine interest by highlighting relevant skills and experiences. ✉️✨ 🚀 The Way Forward: We need to move forward with a proper plan. Cultivate a learning mindset, invest in professional development, and commit to ethical practices. Understand the job market, research salary ranges, and tailor your applications to show genuine interest in the specific role and company. 🌟🔍 Let's focus on skill development and personalized approaches to truly thrive in the cybersecurity industry. Securing an Entry-Level Cybersecurity Position: Overcoming Obstacles and Strategies: I've been on a journey to break into the cybersecurity field, and it hasn't been easy. Despite completing courses from Google and Cisco, almost finishing an advanced bootcamp, and gaining hands-on experience through various projects, landing an entry-level position remains a challenge. Why is it so hard? High Bar for Entry-Level Roles: Many entry-level jobs require experience that newcomers typically don't have. Fast-Changing Field: Keeping up with the latest cybersecurity trends and tools is tough and requires continuous learning. Limited Practical Opportunities: Real-world experience is crucial, but opportunities to gain it are scarce. How can we improve this? More Internships and Apprenticeships: Companies can offer more practical experience opportunities. Realistic Job Requirements: Adjusting job descriptions to match true entry-level expectations. Strong Academia-Industry Links: Better alignment of educational programs with industry needs. Supportive Communities: Building networks and mentorship programs to support newcomers. Value Transferable Skills: Recognizing skills from other fields that apply to cybersecurity. As we navigate these challenges, it's essential to stay persistent and continue honing our skills. The cybersecurity community is vibrant and supportive, and together, we can create more opportunities for the next generation of cybersecurity experts. Let's connect, share experiences, and work towards making the cybersecurity field more accessible and inclusive for all. #CyberSecurity #EntryLevelJobs #CareerAdvice #Mentorship #CyberSecurityCareers
