I recently took part in a speaking engagement at my old college. It was for students in Dental Hygienists school. It's important for them to learn from people with different disabilities in order to provide the best care in the future when they go out in the world. So many people came up to me thanking me for my invaluable teachings I provided during the panel, and even during the simulation. Getting to hear the students share their feedback with me as well during the debrief, it made me realize that not only did I help them shift their perspective to see the world from my view but they also felt that I shifted my own perspective to see the world from their view. Ultimately, leaving everyone feeling like they were understood, heard, and left with confidence. I wanted to share a bit of what shifting your perspective means, and what it could do for you and those around you. Shifting your perspective to see the world from someone else’s viewpoint is a powerful exercise in empathy, creativity, and personal growth. By imagining others' daily struggles, joys, and challenges, you develop greater compassion and understanding of diverse experiences. This practice, often used by artists and performers, enhances self-awareness, improves communication, and strengthens relationships. It also fosters social awareness and inspires actions toward equality and inclusivity. Effective leaders and problem-solvers benefit from considering multiple viewpoints, leading to more informed decisions and innovative solutions. Practical steps like active listening, reading, travel, volunteer work, and mindfulness can help you adopt different perspectives, enriching your life and contributing to a more empathetic and connected world. #ShiftingYourPerspective #SeeTheWorld #Empathy #PersonalGrowth #MultipleViewpoints #ConnectedWorld #ActiveListening #SpeakingEngagements #Educating #SharingRealExperience

☺️ #Kindness can be contagious! Carolyn Crist writes: Receiving kindness in the academic workplace can boost well-being, reduce stress and strengthen institutional identity, according to a new study published in the journal PLOS ONE. In turn, those who receive kindness are more likely to perform acts of kindness, the researchers found. They looked at several aspects of kindness — such as feeling safe and acknowledged — and how kindness promotes positivity and inclusion. “We wanted to develop measures of kindness. When I say, ‘Let’s be kind to each other,’ we want tangible, specific actions we can implement,” K. Kanoho Hosoda, PhD, the lead researcher and director of the University of Hawai’i School of Medicine’s Native #Hawaiian Center of Excellence, said in a statement. Hosoda and colleagues defined kindness as actions that affirm dignity and social #inclusion, including several metrics: trust, autonomy, understanding, inclusion, fair treatment, acknowledgment, safety and acceptance of identity. The researchers surveyed 182 higher education workers about their experiences with the different metrics. At the University of Hawai’i School of Medicine, for instance, several #faculty members are creating learning communities for students to provide support and inclusion, Hosoda noted. Nurturing kindness across #academia, especially in medical education, can extend kindness into clinical practice and benefit the broader community, Hosoda said. Workers say they want to work for a company with empathetic and emotionally intelligent leaders, even for a pay cut, according to an HP report. People management approaches should more directly address employee happiness through community, panelists said at an Academy of Management event. Showing kindness, recognizing workers and creating an open environment for discussions can go a long way, they said. #WorkplaceInclusion #MedicalEducation

Promote Education and Awareness: Increase understanding of neurodivergent conditions by sharing accurate information about neurodiversity. Schools, workplaces, and communities should offer training and resources that challenge misconceptions and highlight the strengths and experiences of neurodivergent individuals. Foster Accessible Environments: Create spaces that accommodate diverse sensory, social, and communication and cultural needs. This could involve providing quiet areas, offering multiple modes of communication (verbal, written, visual), and allowing flexible work or learning schedules, accommodation with cultural inclusion. Encourage Neurodivergent Voices: Ensure that diverse neurodivergent individuals are involved in decision-making processes that affect them. Empower marginalzied self-advocacy by amplifying their voices in policy discussions, community planning, and workplace diversity initiatives. Build Empathy and Patience: Encourage a culture of empathy and patience. Understanding that everyone processes the world differently helps create a more compassionate society. Small acts of kindness and open-mindedness can go a long way in supporting neurodivergent individuals' inclusion.

#publication alert. How does kindness shape well-being in higher education? A new study, "The influence of kindness on academics’ identity, well-being, and stress" (PLOS ONE), highlights the profound effects of kindness on students, staff, and faculty in academia. In a study of 182 participants, researchers developed scales to measure both "Kindness Given" and "Kindness Received" in academic environments. The results are powerful: receiving kindness was linked to increased well-being, reduced stress, and stronger institutional identity. Acts like being acknowledged and feeling safe were especially meaningful, reinforcing dignity and social inclusion. This research suggests that fostering a culture of kindness in higher education isn’t just about being nice—it’s about building healthier, more inclusive communities. Imagine the impact if every institution prioritized actions that promote belonging and reduce stress! Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g7u9n3S7 h/t to Mica B. Estrada, Ph.D. for sharing!

Read a passage this morning from The Canary Code that struck deep: >>“Sensory inclusion needs are often nonapparent, partly for this reason, are not seen as real and are consequently denied and disregarded. We can’t belong if we are not believed.”<< Sensory overwhelm makes me (and soooo many other neurodivergent folx like me) physically ill. And yet sensory inclusion in meeting design, or at minimum designating sensory safe places, is deemed an optional consideration or nonessential for an event. The safety, health, wellbeing, inclusion and equal participation of neurodivergent attendees is an optional consideration, nonessential. As we are reflecting on how we can iterate toward more #inclusive #learning spaces, speakers, materials, and measurement for #Disability Pride Month, it’s important to realize not all disability is visible or disclosed. As an example, neurodiversity is often considered an invisible disability because it's not always noticeable or disclosed. If we can't see it, or learners do not feel comfortable disclosing their needs, does that mean we are exempt from accommodating them? Nope! Neurodivergence is a natural brain and nervous system variant that (as our best current data shows) is present within 1 in 5 people. #Neurodivergent folx think, learn and interact differently. If we want to call our learning events #inclusive, we must account for these differences in the design and delivery of our programs. Understanding someone's past experiences helps grasp their future perspectives, Meaning Matters. Our comprehension shapes our reactions. Altering someone's experiences can shape their interpretation. Despite Mommy's challenges, supporting her is instinctive, yet she desires autonomy. Hospitalization taught valuable lessons, especially through Angela's influence. Learning to listen, show compassion, and embrace humility has transformed my caregiving approach. Recognizing patients' voices is key; their insights guide effective care. Rather than sticking to a rigid plan, adapting and empathizing enriches caregiving. Growth comes from learning at the feet of those we care for, emphasizing the importance of listening and soft skills. Mommy doesn’t only need to check my to do list as care. Has actually doing something ever changed your perspective of it from what you originally thought? 👩🏾🏫 Hi I am Micheleina 👩🏾🏫 I use care & education to create equity culture in under represented communities 👩🏾🏫 let’s connect #listening #inclusion #educatorsimpact #leadership #MCH

Discipline is the cornerstone of helping our children navigate their emotions, actions, and impulses, fostering self-management skills essential for their development. Our goal is to nurture strong morals and ethics by guiding them to evaluate their behavior and impulses against a standard of what's right and wrong. This evaluation is not merely driven by consequences but resonates with their sense of integrity. Many mistake discipline for mere punishment, associating it with methods like time-outs, grounding, or taking away privileges. But what if we shifted our perspective and viewed discipline as parents establishing clear expectations and supporting their children in meeting them? It starts with setting firm, fair, and consistent boundaries for behavior. Through open conversations, leading by example, and providing guidance, we instill in them a sense of accountability and respect for these boundaries. But what happens when those boundaries are crossed? How do you handle when your four-year-old lashes out in frustration and behaves in an unacceptable manner? Instead of reacting with threats or punishment, take a moment to breathe and calmly address the behavior. We sit with our child, acknowledging their feelings while firmly stating the unacceptable nature of their actions. We listen to their perspective, striving to understand their point of view. By engaging in this dialogue, we not only teach empathy but also ensure they understand the reasons behind our expectations. Then we collaborate on finding a solution. Whether it's finding alternative ways to preserve their creations or compromising on a resolution, the key is to approach it as a team. When we start this style of communication early on, it becomes a natural way to problem solve as they get older. Remember, discipline isn't about control; it's about fostering mutual understanding and respect. By remaining firm, fair, and consistent in our approach, we empower our boys to make responsible choices and grow into individuals that do what is right, even when no one is there to ensure they do. In a nutshell, these are effective strategies to use when disciplining your son: Stay Calm: Take a moment to breathe and collect your thoughts before reacting. Acknowledge Feelings: Validate your son's emotions while firmly addressing unacceptable behavior. Listen and Understand: Hear out his perspective to foster empathy and mutual understanding. Explain the Reasoning: Clearly communicate why certain behaviors are expected and necessary. Collaborate on Solutions: Work together to find fair solutions that meet both of your needs. Remain Consistent: Uphold established rules and consequences consistently to reinforce expectations. #raisingkids #parenthood #family #mumofboys #boys #raisingboys #sonhood #parentsofboys #parentingcoach #parentingadvice #raisingaboy #parenting #parentsupport #discipline

In a world driven by technology and rapid change, one timeless value remains at the heart of human connection – empathy. I am passionate about exploring empathy's profound impact on shaping a brighter, more compassionate future for our society. Empathy, defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, is not just a soft skill; it's a cornerstone for building stronger relationships, fostering cooperation, and driving positive change. Here's how empathy, when nurtured in both parenting and education, has the potential to transform the world, one person at a time: 1. Building Stronger Families: In the realm of parenting, empathy serves as the glue that binds families together. When parents actively practice empathy, they create an environment where children feel heard, understood, and valued. This emotional connection forms the basis for trust and open communication within the family, laying the foundation for resilient and supportive relationships. 2. Nurturing Inclusive Communities: In the educational sphere, cultivating empathy is essential for creating inclusive and diverse learning environments. When educators prioritize teaching empathy, students develop a deep understanding of different perspectives and learn to appreciate the richness that diversity brings. This, in turn, fosters a sense of belonging and unity within the school community. 3. Enhancing Social and Emotional Intelligence: Empathy is a key component of social and emotional intelligence – skills crucial for success in both personal and professional spheres. By integrating empathy into education, we equip students with the ability to navigate complex social dynamics, resolve conflicts peacefully, and collaborate effectively, preparing them for a future where emotional intelligence is highly valued. 4. Cultivating Global Citizens: In an interconnected world, empathy is the bridge that connects individuals across cultural, geographical, and ideological divides. Through education that emphasizes empathy, we raise a generation of global citizens who understand the challenges others face and are motivated to work collaboratively towards solutions that benefit humanity as a whole. 5. Driving Positive Change: On a larger scale, the cumulative effect of empathetic parenting and education can drive positive societal change. When individuals grow up in environments that prioritize empathy, they are more likely to become compassionate leaders, change-makers, and advocates for justice, paving the way for a more equitable and harmonious world. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, let us recognize the transformative power of empathy in shaping the world we want to live in. We can contribute to a global shift towards greater understanding, compassion, and unity by instilling empathy in our parenting practices and educational systems. Together, we can change the world, one human at a time.
