Every expert was once a beginner. — Helen Hayes The phrase job description “entry-level” seems to have shifted its meaning. What was once a first step into a new career now seems to demands that you've already climbed a few rungs of the ladder. For career-changers like teachers, we’re finding that this entry-level rung is often out of reach, with ‘1-2 years experience required’ written on it. Teachers bring powerful, transferable skills—expert communication, adaptability, the ability to teach and connect with people of all ages and backgrounds; students, rational and irrational parents, administrators, and colleagues alike. We problem-solve, develop plans and strategies, manage time, multitask, we navigate complex emotional and educational landscapes every day, and when we are asked to do “just one more thing” we do it, time and time again. Yet, these skills are often overlooked in new industries because they don’t fit into a standard job description. Comment on what you think the new term for “entry level”. HAVING A DEGREE DOES NOT GUARANTEE EMPLOYMENT❌ SKILL DEVELOPMENT IS A MUST✔️ Education involves gaining knowledge, while skill development focuses on applying this knowledge in specific fields. In current job market, securing entry-level positions often requires practical experience and specialised skills rather than just academic qualifications. Emphasising skill-based education is crucial for both career advancement and personal growth.

As an education company, we believe that hiring fresh from university and entry level staff is possible and can get less stressful. Education and coaching is a successful tool that we use to build the competence of our team mates regardless of how much experience one posseses. There is a lot of talk about how much effort it takes to build a team of fresh graduates especially one comprised of Gen Z. We say that Education is the answer. Be willing to invest in educating your human resource. Do not assume that everyone knows what to do. The same education applys to the team leads and business leaders. Seek knowledge, seek an education that supportd your work, be teachable, be a teacher, have an attitude of life long learning. Do not be scared of hiring young people. #MondayThoughts #Hiring #Education #Genz #BuildingTeams #Youth

On Graduate Education and the evolving Trainee-Supervisor Dynamics (Part #1) Supervisors, Trainees, and Career Readiness Graduate education is not for the faint-hearted. It can be enriching, rewarding, and stressful at the same time. The trainee, academic professors, graduate program staff, and the university are the main players in the journey to a rewarding and worthwhile endeavour. So, it breaks my heart every time I hear about graduates struggling to land a good/decent position after spending 2 -5 years of rigorous study in grad school. While I am aware of multiple reasons why a new graduate my end in such a precarious situation, let me begin by spotlighting the role that academic supervisors play in preparing the trainees for their post-graduation careers of trainees. Academic supervisors are typically established researchers with relevant expertise to guide trainees through an area of research or through their entire academic journey. In addition to trainee supervision, the scope of responsibilities for professors, typically include, but not limited to, grant applications, conducting research, running a research lab, teaching, traveling, speaking engagements, collaborating with other researchers, administrative service, peer-review duties, and many more. Amidst this plethora of competing priorities, it is easy to lose sight of each trainee's individual goals and aspirations. The traditional model of academic supervision is tailored to preparing trainees for career in academia. However, with only less than 10% of graduate trainees ending up as educators in academia, graduate supervision and mentoring needs to evolve to prepare trainees for careers outside academia, or a career that is a hybrid of both worlds. With the changing landscape of the global labour market, academic institutions and educators need to help trainees prepare for careers after graduation by providing experiential learning and/or professional development opportunities that prepares them for life after grad school. On a personal note, any time I have a new student working with me, I spend the first meeting asking about their aspirations and career plans post-graduation. The question is meant to help me understand their expectations and to guide the type of experiential learning or training opportunities I can provide to support such goals. So, if you an educator or researcher reading this, please ensure you have conversations with your trainee(s) about their career plans and help them develop career readiness competences for success. If you have trainees who have graduated and still struggling to land something, take time to check in with them to see how you may be of help. #academicmusings

"Master’s degree holder unable to secure a job | Top student with a 3.75 CGPA offered RM2.2k monthly | 5.92 million fresh grads recorded in 2022 in Malaysia." An article in Free Malaysia Today reported that employers are paying less attention to university rankings if graduates lack soft skills. The industry and job market are increasingly seeking candidates with soft skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving over those with higher CGPAs. This is because candidates with strong soft skills can work more efficiently and effectively in teams. The specific knowledge needed for their roles can be acquired on the job. With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, the lack of practical skills can now be supplemented through various powerful tools. Mastering soft skills has become the key to standing out among millions. Formal education is a myth now! When I say this, I respect formal educational processes in fields where trust is an important element, for example, doctors, CAs, lawyers, architects, and so on. Very few opt for those fields. I am scared of the mentality of the rest of the students and parents. You go to any college and visit the freshmen's classroom, ask them to study for three years with two conditions: no degree and no placements. Only learning of skills. That's it. And see how many people will be willing to do that. Being in college, spending three years stressing about unit tests, practicals, and assignments, for what? A placement? People think getting a job somewhere is a career. A career is about specializing in a certain skill, not just getting a job. The placement jobs offer you temporary satisfaction; believe me or not, you can be replaced in two hours max. You sit in a classroom filled with 80-90 students around you studying a syllabus that has been repeated for the past three years. Not only that, it's not just your college; it's the same in every college under your university. How far will you reach? Look around your cubicle; almost every person has been through the same academic journey as you. What's the best you could do to outperform them? Nothing. New-aged companies believe in hiring based on your skills, nuances, and creativity. Trends are way more dynamic today. How can you study something about it on a blackboard based on a syllabus that has been there for three years? And formal education is not your base. Today, a new and unique approach to things is appreciated, and that's what's sheerly needed. You can learn any skill and invest in your creativity and approach to be highly irreplaceable. That's how you should operate in today's world. Im not against the few benefits of Formal Education but that’s not gonna make you win and that’s a reality.
